Is the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet Safe?

Question: Is the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet safe?

Answer: The beverage itself isn't harmful--it's just a dressed up blend of juices--but the diet it comes with is unsafe. In case you're not aware, the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet only allows you to drink three full glasses of its juice per day, netting you a grand total of 300 calories. You are also not allowed to drink or eat anything else, aside from water and calorie-free beverages.

Let's take a closer look at the dangers of this "miracle diet":

A lack of nutrition: Although the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet may contain adequate amounts of vitamin A, C, E and other minerals, it's lacking in other essential components, such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber and fat. A deficiency in any of these core components is dangerous.

For example, if your body does not receive enough protein, it siphons protein from your muscles instead, leading to muscle wasting. If you keep your carbohydrates too low, your body may enter ketosis, which can lead to kidney problems. A safe, well balanced diet should contain adequate amounts of all these essential components--limiting them can lead to further complications.

A lack of calories: 1200 calories is considered the minimum safe intake for dieters--any lower than that and you risk entering starvation mode, which causes your metabolism to slow down.

The Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet contains only one-fourth of the recommended minimum amount for dieting. Staying on this diet for too long could cause complications similar to anorexia nervosa, such as changes in mood, low blood pressure, a slowed heart rate, constipation and poor memory. According to HelpGuide.org, it may also cause potassium and magnesium deficiencies.

Even short term use of this diet could cause changes in your energy levels, how you think and how well your brain functions. It's just not safe for short term or long term use.

Is the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet Safe?

Here's my bottom line: Using "detox" programs such as the Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet are never safe. This diet is devoid of good nutrition or calories, which can cause complications related to short-term anorexia nervosa. Don't forget that any weight you lose, which will mostly consist of water weight, will return once you start eating again.

If you desperately need to lose weight, eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and make sure to burn some of those calories through exercise. It's not quick, but it is safe, healthy and effective.
