Is Hollywood Park, Crestwood, Illinois, the Family Fun Park for You?

Nora Beane
It's not hard to answer the question: Is Hollywood Park, Crestwood, Illinois the family park for you. A few hours at this area kid magnate and multi-faceted fun park can clear up any confusion you might have had and get you to a very positive answer. I had the opportunity to visit the park as an honorary chaperon for a church youth group made up of children ages 6-14. I came away with some very distinct impressions of the value that such a park has for families in surrounding communities

Hollywood Park, Crestwood, Illinois is not a new kid on the block when it comes to providing entertainment for families, groups and individuals. This fun park got its start more than 20 years ago opening in 1989. One can only imagine how many wonderful times were enjoyed by how many smiling folks in those 20 years. The park continues in 2010 to be a big draw especially among those living in the suburbs south of Chicago.

Among the positive features of the park that seemed to jump out for me were the specialty activities. Our group tried them all. It wasn't just the boys that sought adventure either. The girls were excited by the prospects offered for fun on Go-Karts and didn't shy away from the "wham-bam" exchanges in the bumper car pit. For the thrill seekers who want to challenge themselves and their climbing ability, Hollywood Park provides a modest climbing wall. With some of the less thrill seeking kids, I found myself playing through a round of miniature golf.

Besides the special activities, Hollywood Park, Crestwood, Illinois is loaded with electronic games that all the kids seemed to enjoy. Their interest in the games was stoked by the visible prizes that waited for those who had success, measured in tickets, in playing the various games of their choice.

All this fun requires energizing. After about an hour of play our group enjoyed pizza and a beverage at a quiet and sequestered eating area, where they were easy to supervise and serve. Then back to the attractions.

What I liked best about the experience that I shared at Hollywood Park, Crestwood, Illinois wasn't necessarily the variety of activities. To me what was more laudatory was the evidence that I saw of a staff that seemed trained and dedicated to the safety and well being of all its young guests. When someone ran into difficulty on the Go-Kart track there was a trained staffer immediately present to get the driver back on track safely and quickly. The same was true in the bumper car pit. That's the kind of thing that parents and grand-parents like to see.

The price too did not seem exorbitant. When you priced out what all of the activities and refreshments would have cost if purchased individually you could see the real value of coming together as a group and paying a single flat rate up front of $20. Good value in entertainment can be hard to come by but not at Hollywood Park.

Like any park that services the public there are bound to be some observable failings. From my perspective the food service seemed to lack a little precision in the timeliness of its deliveries. I waited way too long for a burger and a drink because I was not part of a birthday party group but wandered in on my own. It also seemed as if the birthday party area had a lot of staff but was rather disorganized with a few too many supervisory people and not enough folks with their sleeves rolled up. This was in contrast to what I saw in the park itself.

Still for an afternoon of fun with family or group, an annual visit to Hollywood Park would seem to be pretty much a plus on anyone's schedule.
