Is Hummus Safe During Pregnancy?

Many women aim to incorporate healthy foods into their diet during pregnancy. Hummus, which is made from chickpeas and sesame paste, is generally eaten with whole-wheat pita bread or fresh vegetables. Is it safe for you to eat hummus while you're pregnant, though? Here's what all women should know about eating hummus during pregnancy.

Is Hummus a Good Nutritional Fit for a Pregnancy Diet?

Hummus can be an ideal option for your diet during pregnancy. It contains protein, which can make it an excellent food choice for vegetarians. Hummus is also generally low in saturated fat and calories. If you're trying to follow a healthier diet, you may find that it can be a good replacement for other fatty foods. You can use hummus as a substitute for mayonnaise on sandwiches or cream cheese on bagels.

Most brands of hummus do contain sodium, however. If you're trying to watch your blood pressure levels during pregnancy, hummus may not be the best option. Consuming only moderate amounts of store-bought hummus is ideal for anyone who is trying to keep their blood pressure under control. To find out if hummus meets your nutritional requirements, talk to your healthcare provider.

Why Wouldn't Hummus be Safe for Pregnant Women?

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which can lead to an illness called listeriosis, has been linked to eating hummus that has been commercially produced, according to U.S. National Library of Medicine. Women who are pregnant are more likely to experience listeriosis than other adults. Listeriosis can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature labor, stillbirth, neonatal death, and even death, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Do You Have to Give up Hummus During Pregnancy?

If you have a craving for hummus while you're pregnant, the good news is that you don't need to give it up altogether. Consider trying out a homemade hummus recipe, such as the low-sodium recipe which is offered by the Mayo Clinic. This will allow you to enjoy hummus without having to worry about the listeria contamination which can occur in a commercial setting. Remember to always practice food safety in the kitchen to reduce the risk of bacteria contamination at home.

Hummus can be a healthy food choice for pregnant women, despite concerns about the risk of a listeria infection. To enjoy hummus and keep the risk of infection at bay, the best thing that pregnant women can do is prepare it at home. If you have any questions about the risks of eating hummus or other foods during pregnancy, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider.
