Why is a graduation party important? When your child receives a diploma from high school this is a coming-of-age ritual and deserves special attention. They have passed a milestone in life that should never go unnoticed.
Hosting a high school graduation party everyone from Grandma's to Aunts and Uncles are there, also half or more of the graduating class. This is a wide variety of ages and interests. One way to tie the age groups together is the food and decorations you choose.
You can find a wide selection of graduation theme party decorations at your local party supply store. They will have more options, better prices and the quality is great. Then you have to plan a menu that will please many different types of eaters. For example, if you are just having munchies, try finger sandwiches, fruit plate, vegetable plate, and chips and dip. If you would like more of a meal but let everyone do the fixings themselves, how about a taco bar. You can have the meat cooked up ahead of time. If you have a roaster, this is a good way to keep the taco meat warm. Include in your taco fixings, lettuce, onions, olives, jalapenos, and a few different kinds of cheeses, sour cream and guacamole. Don't forget to severe different levels of salsa. Some people like it hot others don't. Plates, napkins, silverware, and cups can by stacked neatly on the corner of your table.
Don't forget the graduation cake. If you are a cake decorator, you can do this yourself otherwise, have a professional cake made. You can have the main graduation cake made and then offer sheet cakes on the side. This just depends on the number of guest.
Remember, no matter the guest age rang; this is a high school graduation party. No alcohol should be served. The best beverages to serve are chilled soda, mineral water and sport drinks. Kids love these!
For a fun-for-all-age activity, how about a karaoke player set up. Young and old may want to give it a shot. If you want to go all out, put together a power point presentation. Include appropriate embarrassing pictures of the guest of honor and his/her friends. This always will ensure lots of laughs, and good natural ribbing.
If your child has grown up in the same town and with the same friends for 12 years, this is something very special. You can ask their friends parents for pictures that you may not have. Better yet, you could get together with your grad friend's parents and throw one slam bang of a party.
Don't forget to take photos and videotape the party. This is a permanent record of high school friends for your graduate. Some of these friends will be going their own separate ways into the world.
It's very important that you try to stay focused on introducing everyone. With a wide variety of people attending the graduation party not everyone will know everyone. Make sure you let people mingle and talk. Don't be surprised at some point, the high school kids drift off from the older folks. This is perfectly normal. When it's time to cut the cake everyone will draw back together. Remember, through out the party to replenish the food and drinks as needed.
Cutting the graduation cake, to some people it's the fair well. The graduate needs to make a speech. He or she can tell about their senior year in high school and where they are going to college. This doesn't have to be a long speech. They will probably feel embraced. They will get plenty of speech making in college.
At a high school graduation party where there are the students fiends, it's not appropriate for the grad to open his or her gifts. This can be done after the graduates friends have left or the next day. If a family member wants to see the grad open the gift, they should do this out of site of friends.
Picking the day to have your child's graduation party is a tricky one. There are many festivities and family commitments scheduled this time of year, so choose a date and time that allows you're graduate to be flexible. He or she will want to attend their friend's parties also. You might want to make you're a drop-in type party if there is a date conflict. Just don't be offended if not everyone accepts your invitation.
Remember that graduation is one of the most awaited events in the life of a high school student. This day should be special and celebrated. It's a passage into a higher level of education - college. It is also a symbol of freedom for the high school student.
