Is it Just Me or Are Online Shipping Costs Too High?

The High Price of Having Things Delivered Directly to Your Door

Are you looking to purchase something online? Online shopping is so convenient that you just might be. However, do you honestly know what you are getting into? Many times you fill find, of course after you have completed all of your shopping, just how much shipping costs. Unfortunately, most of the time it is more money that it should be and I'm not just talking about the shipping associated with online auction websites, I am talking about the shipping associated with well-known and popular retail stores.

Of course, I have always realized that shipping costs could be high, but I never really experienced it firsthand until recently. I, like many other online shoppers, assumed that I would have to pay a fairly decent amount of money for a large item, such as a piece of furniture, but what about something smaller. For instance, I was interested in purchasing my mother a necklace for her birthday. Call me cheap, but something that weights about the same as a standard envelop shouldn't could more that seven or eight dollars to be shipped.

When taking the costs of shipping into consideration, it is important to remember how those items are being shipping. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell until your items have arrived. However, even if that necklace was shipped priority mail, which it wouldn't have been, and even with insurance, the shipping still shouldn't have totaled seven or even eight dollars, in my opinion. Of course, like a fool, I decided to pay the shipping. It was something that could be delivered to my mother's door, but since that day I have always been thinking about the high costs of shopping online.

Although you might want to purchase jewelry online, there is an even better chance that you would be interested in buying clothing, whether that clothing be for yourself or someone else in your family. Unfortunately, you will often find the same problem. A large number of online retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, and Kohl's, charge what I believe to be too much for shipping. I find it a little bit difficult to pay five dollars, and sometimes even more, just to have a pair of infant pants shipped. It wouldn't necessarily be so bad, if they didn't charge you the same amount for multiple items. For instance, I recently tried to purchase three pairs of pants for my daughter; the shipping costs were almost fifteen dollars alone. I could have bought an additional pair of pants for that much money.

While Target, Wal-Mart, and Kohl's were mentioned above, they are just examples. You can also find a number of other well-known online retailers that charge too much money for shipping. However, it is also important to note that many of these stores regularly offer shipping discounts. If you are able to find these shipping discounts and make your online purchases then, the cost of shipping wouldn't necessarily be so bad.

If you don't wait to wait until that happens, you should check out Old Navy or Aeropostale. They are just a few of the online clothing stores that I have come across that appear to have relatively affordable shipping prices. In fact, with both stores you can often purchase multiple items and only pay shipping costs of around five or six dollars. If you ask me, that is not only affordable, but reasonable.

Shipping costs often seem to include the cost of the box, tape, labels and the person who is putting it all together to send to you.

Coming at this from an entrepreneurial standpoint, I recently switched from standing in line at USPS to doing my shipping with Stamps.com. It's much easier to print my postage at home than stand in line for 30 minutes every time I need to mail something. The $16 monthly cost is totally worth it, and I hope my clients think so too.

I suggest ignoring this "Does it really cost $8 to ship?" concept. It really doesn't matter. Just add up how much the item going to cost you. Price, tax, shipping, and anything else. Once you have that number, is it a good price? If so, purchase. If not, buy somewhere else.
