Is Kanye West a Bad Role Model for Kids?

Mark Mielke
It is natural for children to form role models. It is also natural for children to form role models with people they are familiar with. Like singers and movie stars. That idea just makes you swallow in fear, doesn't it, parents? Well, luckily, most people try to be good role models. Some however, fail miserably in their attempt. The question I want to answer is this; is Kanye West a positive role model for our kids? In case you don't know, Kanye West is a rap star. He is famous, or should I say infamous, for getting involved in scandals and saying controversial things.

In the past, Kanye West has gotten involved in many controversial and scandalous situations. The first one I ever heard of is his saying that he should be in the modern day bible. This simple statement was extremely controversial, and it sparked many protests from an outraged religious community (I wonder why?). This may not have been so bad, but Kanye later started to compare himself to angels, saints, and even God himself. He also restated and reaffirmed his belief that he should be in a modern bible. If you thought the religious folks were mad before, you should have seen them then! They were absolutely livid. The religious aspect isn't his only flaw.

Many people have criticized Kanye for his giant ego (and yes, it can easily be said that his ego was and still is much larger than life). Like I said before, he has stated his belief that he should be in the bible. This alone should tell you something about how he views himself. He has also, and on numerous occasions, viewed himself as a spokesperson and messenger of the people. This was made evident by his quote; "I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade." He has also shown several times that he believes himself to be legendary.

His latest scandal was to insult Taylor Swift at an awards show. After Swift won the award for best music video, West took the stage (stealing the microphone from Swift in the process) and told the crowd that Beyonce, one of Swift's competitors for the award, should have won instead. This is not the only incidence where he has insulted other famous singers.

On top of all of this, West has shown that he drinks heavily (and it is very likely that he does drugs). We as parents must ask ourselves... "Is Kanye West really the person we want our kids looking up to?
