Is Kate Gosselin a Bad Mother?

In Defense of Kate Gosselin, a Working Mother

Jane Meyer
In the past few months, Kate Gosselin has been skewered by the media for being a bad mother. Whenever she makes a public appearance in a locale outside of her hometown in Pennsylvania, a reporter or blogger inevitably says that Kate should be home taking care of her kids.

As a working mother, I have to defend Kate Gosselin for showing up at these paid personal appearances and events. She and her ex-husband, Jon Gosselin are responsible for the upbringing of eight kids! That is a huge responsibility and, as Kate has stated many times, her first and most important obligation.

Because of Jon's reported escapades with other women that are detailed in the tabloids (in Jon's defense, these are just tabloid stories, not exactly accurate reporting), Kate may doubt Jon's commitment to living up to his half of the financial responsibility to the children.

So what should poor Kate do? Stay home with her kids and not earn any income? Rely solely on the income from the TLC show "Jon and Kate + 8" to support the family? That's not a good idea, as the show could be canceled at any time by the network.

Should Kate go back to her old career of nursing? According to Payscale.com, the average salary for a nurse with 5 to 9 years of experience is $49,000 to $65,000. That salary is meager and insufficient, compared to the money she earns from television interviews, guest host jobs (The View, for example), photo shoots with the kids, personal appearances, writing books and the reality show "Jon and Kate + 8".

Would the press criticize a working mother who is a high-powered executive and travels for her job at a Fortune 500 company? Do they pass judgment on successful actresses such as Angelina Jolie or Reese Witherspoon when they shoot films on location, far away from their children?

Kate Gosselin is a single mother trying to make a living and support her kids. She has to use her fifteen minutes of fame wisely, in order to make the most long term income possible. She is using her fame to her advantage. She has to think about a future in which she is possibly the sole breadwinner (unless Jon comes through in regards to his future work options).

That's not an enviable position to be in. My message to the media is to live and let live. Kate Gosselin and the kids deserve a break.

Don't know about her mothering skills, I'm just sick of the media acting like she's Princess Di. Hopefully, she is down to the last micro second of her 15 minutes of fame.

If she was a perfect mother then not many people would be interested in her story.

    Good question and evaluation :)

Also, Jon has expressed regrets and seems to want to call off the divorce. This situation gets stranger and stranger.

I think the situation will be complicated by the kids' take on things. How many children live their family lives with cameras filming it for tv? As they get older, I think they will come to their own conclusions. Maybe they will be fine with it or maybe not.

I agree with you... live and let live. Time will tell if she's a bad mom or not.

I just read the headline that the show will now be "Kate Plus 8" and it will focus mostly on her and the kids. I find it really tacky that she's still milking it. The original intent of the show, to document the every day normal lives of parents struggling to raise multiples is gone now that she's not a normal SAHM, and making so much money. I don't think she's a bad mother because she's out doing talk shows or guest appearances, I just think it's shameless to become famous simply because she gave birth to a litter of children.
