Is Kate Gosselin a Major Parenting Fail?

Mary Thatcher
With all of the parenting fails lately to hit the news - whether it is Andrea Yates, Nadya Suleiman, or - heaven forbid - Kate Gosselin, some Americans still ask themselves the following question: why do women have babies they do not want to take care of?

Access Hollywood reports that Kate's lawyers have recently cited her for spending too much time being a major celebrity and taking part in the "Dancing With the Stars" talent show which is televised on ABC. Given the fact that Kate worked fairly hard in order to gain custody of the 8 children she had with former husband Jon, why did she even bother when she knew she does not have too much genuine concern about her eight needy babies? It is not as if Jon has turned a blind eye to Kate, being too consumed with his latest girlfriend. No, he took careful notice, since it is hard to miss Kate on television. Yet somehow in all of this, Kate fits in perfectly with the modern notion of what a parent is: someone who just has babies, but is not necessarily there for the children emotionally or physically. The sextuplets are a result of Kate's wanting "just one more child" in addition to the other two children she had with Jon. Kate's desire for that one more child got the best of her, when her doctor told her she would be having sextuplets. Maybe the most amazing thing about the Gosselins is this: one almost never hears about the welfare of the children while the names of Jon and Kate are plastered all over pop culture. Thus it seems like Kate has managed to successfully use her status as a mother of sextuplets in order to become rich and famous. Jon's lawyer Anthony List accuses Kate of pursuing a career at the expense of her children, which she is doing, and not making the right sacrifices as a parent. It can be difficult enough to make sacrifices for one child, but when one has eight small children, well, maybe that would require too great a sacrifice on Kate's part. Maybe deep down she knows that whatever sacrifices she were to make for her children, they would go unappreciated. Of course, that would be easier to admit to oneself rather than admit that desiring "just one more child" is far more destructive.

Either way, Jon would at least be spending more time with the kids were he to get custody of them. Most fathers enjoy playing with their kids and being with them, and Jon would be in good company with the list of famous single fathers in pop culture, which include Boz Scaggs and Ernie Kovacs. If Kate wants to avoid a major custody battle with Jon, she might be better off forsaking a career as a celebrity mother and being at home with her children, raising them and caring for them properly instead of having a line of disposable nannies for them.
