Is Lost Getting Too Predictable?

Charis Snow
Ever since the beginning of LOST I have been waiting to see who Kate would choose. Ever since the beginning of LOST I have been wondering who will be the next character to die. I never seem to know what is coming next. That is until Season 3 started. I must admit I am rather disappointed that nothing is surprising me on the show anymore.

The deaths of Boone, Shannon, and AnaLucia all came as shocks to me. I recently observed a trend in each of those episodes involving their deaths. When I saw the previews for Season 3 Episode 5 that said someone was going to die I guessed that it would be Mr. Ecko.

I thought 'surely they will surprise us and my pattern will be wrong.'

What is this particular pattern I have observed? When Shannon died the episode had flashbacks about her. When AnaLucia died the flashbacks were also about her. By the time I heard that someone was going to die, and that the episode was going to be Mr. Ecko-centric I just knew he would die. So next time someone is going to die-which I hear will happen sometime in these next 16 episodes in February-do we just look at who the flashbacks are about and know who is going to die?

That seems to predictable, so let's hope my trend is broken. Granted it wasn't the case with Boone...but he was the first, and Libby was a more minor tailie. And no one slept with Mr. Ecko like Shannon and AnaLucia, so that theory is gone, unless that means Kate will die now.

According to the podcast with the producers, they were hoping to trick people with the newcomers, Nikki and what's his face, Paulo, by making viewers think they'd be the ones to go. I never even considered that once. I think that since the show has such a large following of people who study the show intently attempting to figure out where the writers are going with the show, the writers need to be more careful how they plan things if they want to continue surprising us.

As for Kate choosing Sawyer... When I found out on Jimmy Kimmel before Season 3 started that Kate was going to make a choice, and saw that she would be in cages with Sawyer I thought surely the writers won't be that predictable. Would they really put them together in cages like animals in an experiement? Would anything really happen? How could these characters be so degraded to such an animalistic nature?

When Kate said she loved Sawyer, then told him she didn't, I thought perhaps they would bring Jack into the picture somehow. It would be too obvious if she really liked Sawyer. When Kate was forced to talk Jack into doing the surgery I thought maybe the writers would bring in a surprsing twist. Nope. No surprise this time. Kate actually does love Sawyer...for the time being. Viewers can now feel sorry for Jack and look for something between him and Juliet.

The only thing I can hope for is that we'll see Jack still cares for Kate and that causes conflict. Josh Holloway said in an interview that he didn't see Sawyer as the settling down type. Maybe the producers will change their minds again. I love Kate and Sawyer, but that was just too predictable. Not too mention easy. Why didn't the Others stop them? Is there going to be another pregnancy on the island? The Others do have a fascination with children and remember Juliet is a fertility doctor.
I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what the next part of Season 3 brings us.

According to the podcast we're going to see more of the children from the plane. We'll learn more about Desmond, and finally find out how Locke got into his wheelchair. Things will leave "Alcatraz" and go back to the island. The cliffhanger left us wondering how they'll get off the island and whether or not Ben will live. I have some guesses, but I hope I'm wrong. If I'm wrong the show would be less predictable and that would mean the writers were doing their job.

I don't watch the show for it's suprises, I watch it for what it is, rather than what is does. It's hard to explain. There was no doubt about Kate and Sawyer being together in the cages and I was glad about that. With the deaths.....I wasn't too shocked about Eko's death but I guess that's because I didn't like him very much and he whacked Sawyer over the head with his Jesus stick

Yeah, I pretty much look at whomever has recently been arrested for DUI in Hawaii to see who is going to die (AnaLucia, Libby, Ecko)
