Is Manny Pacquaio More Valuable as a Boxer or a Politician?

With Pacquiao Vs. Clottey Lurking, is the Filipino Sensation More Valuable to His Country as a Boxer or Congressman?

Jake Emen
Manny Pacquiao has aspirations that far exceed his exceptional talents in the boxing ring. Growing up amongst the poorest of the poor in the Philippines, he has grown into a global icon and is a beloved hero in his home country. He has political goals and wants to help the many millions of people who support him and come from a similar background. But is he more valuable to his countrymen as a boxer or as a force in the political arena?

Pacquiao vs. Clottey or Pacquiao vs. Congress?

Pacquiao is running for a congressional position and the election will take place this May. It has been rumored that the Pacquiao vs. Clottey bout will be his last so that he can focus on his political journey. That is however far from likely, and it is almost certain that Pacquiao will continue to box for at least several more fights.

He has already run for a political position in the past, and he lost that election. Surely it was not due to a lack of support amongst the people - he's by far the most popular person in his country, eclipsing any level of stardom and celebrity status that we know in the United States. It was perhaps more of a sign that his countrymen wanted to see him continue on with his career, a decision that paid dividends as many of Pacquiao's biggest and best moments have come over the past several years.

When you look at a person such as Lance Armstrong, who has been able to accomplish extraordinary feats for cancer research, awareness and fundraising, none of it would be possible without his athletic background and positioning. He's continuing with his bike riding mainly as an extension of his foundation work, agreeing to participate in certain races and events for various commitments of time, money and more for Live Strong and its goals.

Besides giving the millions in his country pride for staging huge boxing matches and toppling big name foes, he can be using this platform in a similar fashion that Armstrong does his. He's charismatic and likeable, and even with less than perfect English could garner support and raise money for his country if he voiced his concerns, needs and objectives. That has to be a more valuable asset than being one congressman afloat in a sea of many, removed from the public spotlight of the United States and its people who are growingly aware of him and enamored by him.

Ultimately we will find out in the near future if Pacquiao wins the upcoming election. With his popularity and ambition he could make huge strides in his country and for his people. But one has to think that over the next few years while his window of boxing ability is still open that he can provide more value exchanging blows rather than debating bills.

Speaking of boxing. Why don't pacman unify the belts in his current weight? But I'm still looking forward to the day he fights at super welterweight division and probably unify it and retire, that would be great if can do it and I'm sure he'll be the best boxer in the world.

Congressman? What for? So he can help more filipinos? In what way? As you can see a position in the legislative branch is technically meant for smart people. Not unless he wants to become a congressman so he could distribute the pork barrel he'll receive then its pretty lame. Besides if he's that smart and his intentions in running for congress is to help then he really should not enter politics since he has a lot of money and why not invest it in something productive and help the needy in a way that it won't make them lazy. That way he is helping at the same time making sure that his image won't be stained by dirty politics.
