Is the Meat You Eat, Natural?

R. Bourne, Ph.D.
Do you like burgers? Did you know that each hamburger you eat might have pieces of meat and non-meat products from an estimated 1000 cows?

In a recent interview to Eric Schlosser, author of the New York Times bestseller, Fast Food Nation: the Dark Side of the All-American Meal and creator of the documentary "Super Size Me," he mentioned that each hamburger patty from a fast food restaurant has pieces from thousands of cows.

Not only that. But according to information contained in Schlosser's book cows destined to produce hamburger meat are fed a variety of unnatural stuff such as sawdust, newspapers and a significant amount of chicken feces. Add to that the amount antibiotics and hormones that these animals receive during their lifetime and you will see that this kind of meat is far from being called natural-grown meat.

So what is the alternative?

Being this kind of meat so unnatural the solution is trying to find out more "natural" meat. Believe it or not, it is still possible to find "grass fed" natural meat today. Of course this type of meat is more expensive that its "unnatural counterpart" but I guess your health deserve it.

Look into your local grocer or your favorite retail chain store for a section on natural and organic meats. There you will find the "natural" meat, free of antibiotics and hormones from cows that were fed only vegetal material (the way nature intended).

Ways to reduce the cost of eating natural meat

Here are some ways to reduce the cost of eating natural meat

*Buy cheap cuts of natural meat. The cost of meat depends on the cut you buy. Prefer cheap cuts. That way you are eating natural meat at a lower cost.

*Prepare natural meat as a side of a main dish. Instead of making meat the main part of the dish, prepare it as an addition to a less expensive food choice such as pasta or rice. That way you are eating more natural meat at a lower cost.

By the way, do you know what is a "natural food"?. I have written an article about it. Learn What is a natural food?
