People blame media violence on the problems like murder, rape, drugs, and gore. Just because movies contain these themes and concepts, people assume that people get the ideas for doing things like these from the movies they watch, or what they see on television.
However, how much impact can the media really have? People act by nature, not by what they see on television. It's true that the media might have a small influence on people, but there are much more important causes at hand.
Serial killers have psychological problems, all of which are usually similar to eachother. These problems aren't developed from watching people kill eachother on television, they're developed in much earlier stages. Psycopathic people are not made from watching television. End of story.
In more recent studies, I've read that the violence, drugs, and sexual references haven't really even increased much in society. Most people believe that just because they see and hear more of murder, rape, drug use, and other vulgarities that they've been increasing over time.
This is highly unlikely. The media today just tends to focus on more of these issues, because they're more likely to gain the most attention of people watching. People only think that events such as these occur more frequently in modern times because they see and hear more of it.
The truth of the matter is, these things have been happening all throughout history, we're just starting to hear more and more about it now, through the media and through people that spread information around. These events are happening, and are becoming more socially acceptable because we're hearing so much about it.
If these events are truly more socially acceptable, then they're going to happen more. Something must be done about the spreading of these issues before everyone believes it's normal or that we live in a completely messed up world.
So next time you hear someone blame drugs, sex, and violence on the fact that the media shows a lot of these things, remember that these things are not increasing due to people seeing them on television. They're not really even increasing, we just happen to be hearing more and more about these types of events.

Post a CommentI just think that constant exposure of violence towards children has lead to an increase of perceived acceptability of these crimes? I think that some studies would need to be done to prove this but who would do it, the police?
i didn't like this at all
umm did you ever think that seeing violence on television hearing it in song lyrics and actively involving yourself in violence via video games is the reason violence is attributed to media im not saying that is the only reason people commit crimes because they see them but alot of times it desinsitizes them to violence and they become more comfortable with it. media has an effect on violence but its not completely responsible the rest of the responsibility is probably homelife or being abused but i dont have any official statistics on that, but sociologically speaking the family is the most violent institution in the us outside of the military (socy 101) and ps i dont know what statistics you have been reading but check your source im not rambling i know my stuff. but other than that good article
They both have, people need to pay less attention to the news, and more attention to actual statistics and crime-prone cities.
Especially now, since crime rate is at an all time low. New York isn't nearly as dangerous as it used to be. LA has calmed too.
