Is How I Met Your Mother's Two Year Renewal a Good Thing?

"How I Met Your Mother" is one of the best comedies on television and CBS has rewarded it with a renewal for two more seasons. In an age when television shows get canceled after one bad episode it is a huge compliment to reward a season two years in advanced. The only problem is that under the current format "How I Met Your Mother" is going to get old fast, it has already started to annoy some fans. If "How I Met Your Mother" wants to remain relevant for two more seasons then there is a major change that needs to be made.

The plot of "How I Met Your Mother" is that it focuses on Ted Mosby in the present time telling his children how he met his wife and their mother. The show then flashes back to the events that occurred with Ted, his friends and their adventures. It seems that the original plan for the show was that whenever the series finale comes the show is going to end with Ted meeting his future wife.

This was a great plan for the first three seasons but now the tease of meeting Ted's wife has just gotten annoying. Every season they plant some hint as to who is going to be Ted's wife. One season there was an umbrella that belonged to Ted's wife. One season we find out that she was a student in his class. One season we find out that Ted's wife is a season. These seeds are planted but since the show is dead set on not revealing the wife until the final episode'"which will now be season eight at the earliest'"these hints have just sat there for years.

There really is only one story in "How I Met Your Mother" and it is being dragged on ten times longer than a mystery on "Lost". We'll probably finally get a definitive answer on what the Smoke Monster is before we ever find out who Ted's wife is.

The show has also blown plenty of opportunities to cast Ted's wife. There have been some fine actresses play Ted's various girlfriends including Rachel Bilson, Ashley Williams, Sarah Chalke and Jennifer Morrison. Any of these actresses would have been a great permanent fixture on the show but they've all been blown on Ted's ex-girlfriends instead of being cast as Ted's wife.

If "How I Met Your Mother" wants to remain a good television show then there is only one solution. They must choose an actress to play Ted's wife and sign that actress for the next two season. In the premiere of the 7th season Ted finally meets his wife.

It was a nice idea to string out the first meeting of Ted and his wife until the series finale but eight seasons is too long to drag it on. Introduce Ted's wife next season, do away with the present Ted talking to his kids and just make the rest of the show about Ted dating his wife and getting to know the rest of the gang. The series can still go out with a series finale bang by having Ted propose to his future wife in the final episode.
