His voice is quickly becoming a household familiarity as he climbs his way to the top of the American Idol ladder.
On March 25, the contestants were to choose a song from the year that they were born. Johns is the oldest contestant in the Top 10 this year and chose "We Will Rock You/We are the Champions" by Queen. No one can forget this powerful song duo, and very few who watched the show last night will forget Johns' performance.
He has a great voice with consistently fabulous pitch. His presence is strong, but not overwhelming. John's maturity and experience have already proved to be assets many times already during this competition. He could definitely win this competition. However, right now, his biggest competitor is David Cook. While Johns definitely has the better personality, he lacks the creativity and boldness that Cook displayed in his performance.
Yes, it is hard to bring something new to a Queen song (and feel confident about your changes), but I would still like to see Johns take a risk or two in his arrangements.
He doesn't have to rewrite the song, but it would be nice to see a little more in his personality. A few good, well thought out risks could give him enough edge to beat Cook. Otherwise, the competition could come down to a very close race. Johns does not seem naturally competitive, but, in the end, he may need a little fire to ensure his place at the top. I must admit that Michael Johns is not my favorite contestant, but I think that it is simply because he seems just a little too safe.
