Is Nickelodeon Making New Episodes of Classic Cartoons?

A Closer Look at This "annoucement" and Apparent Hoax.

One of the newest rumors to spread like wildfire on Twitter, Facebook and other sites is the announcement that Nickelodeon is making new episodes of classic cartoons, such as "Doug," "Rugrats," "Angry Beavers" and other shows typically associated with 90s Nick Toons. Unfortunately, no reliable sources have come forward to confirm this rumor, and news that the announcement is merely yet another hoax has only begun to spread by word of mouth and disgruntled tweets or status updates. The frenzy regarding this rumor escalated when an image of a Nickelodeon press release detailing the announcement started circulating on Twitter; you can view the image of the announcement which was circulating here.

Although these TV shows continue to be popular in reruns, most of them ceased to have new episodes a decade ago. Nickelodeon fans who avidly watched these cartoons when they first premiered are well into adulthood; "Doug" was the first of the classic Nick Toons to debut, with the pilot airing in 1990. "Rugrats" followed in 1991, and Nickelodeon continued to release new episodes until 2002. With many fans considering these classic cartoons a staple from their childhood, it's no wonder that the hope for new episodes sent many of them into a tweeting frenzy. While logistics of reuniting the original casts of voice actors, directors and produces would be a nightmare for the powers-that-be at Nickelodeon to accomplish, it that didn't stop many long-time fans from hoping in vain that the announcement of new episodes as of March 14th, 2011, was legitimate.

Fortunately, fans of the classic cartoons from Nickelodeon can now view their favorite Nick Toons whenever they want a nostalgic trek into the early 90s. Episodes are available for purchase on iTunes, and many of the classic cartoons have TV sets of seasons-or the entire series run-available on DVD or Blu-Ray. The official Nickelodeon website has clips or even whole episodes available, depending on which of the classic cartoons fans search for, and some even enjoy air time on the TV channel.

Fans disappointed to learn that Nickelodeon is not making new episodes of classic cartoons can band together in various social circles, which are dedicated to the memory of these famous Nick Toons. Countless fan-made websites devoted to remembering the popularity of "Doug," "Angry Beavers" and "Rugrats" exist on the Internet, as do e-Groups on websites like Facebook. The "Doug" Fan Page has over 3,400,000 "Likes" on Facebook, and "Rugrats" has over 1,100,000 "Likes;" both groups are great indicators of the continuing loyalty fans of the classic cartoons on Nickelodeon share. One Facebook group, called "Join if you used to watch Catdog, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Or Ahh Real Monsters," has over 2,600,000 "Likes" alone, and countless additional groups are available for disappointed fans to band together and commiserate over the hoax. With so much enduring loyalty, it's easily to believe that a company as influential as Nickelodeon could consider revisiting some of the most successful cartoons in the history of their network of TV shows. Unfortunately, at least for now, the announcement about Nickelodeon making new episodes of classic cartoons seems to be nothing more than a rather cruel, and highly disappointing, hoax.

What an excellent coverage of this rumor. I will be back home this afternoon and able to log into a desktop, instead of fighting with laptop, and catch up with articles.
