Is Nickelodeon Politically Indoctrinating Your Children into Supporting Liberal Causes and Democrats?

Marc Schenker
It is the home of perhaps the most commercially successful cartoon character ever-SpongeBob Squarepants (who apparently lives in a, of all things, pineapple under the sea)-harmlessly piping its way into millions of American homes under the guise of kiddie entertainment. Yet if you scratch the surface just a little bit and peer a tad more closely into its programming, who runs the channel, and the kinds of promotions they run, you can make a better-than-decent argument that Nickelodeon is trying to politically indoctrinate your children into supporting liberal causes. In fact, the boss of the channel is a partisan Democrat who consistently gives the maximum amount to Democrat presidential candidates. It only follows then that this severe slant is reflected in many of the questionable programming choices Nickelodeon features. Liberals do know that targeting children is one of the most effective means of political indoctrination since they're a captive audience, so this is just straight from their playbook.

According to media analyst James Hirsen, there's a whole lot of troubling indicators-many featuring empirical evidence-that Nickelodeon has for many years been driving home a stubborn, left-wing agenda on the impressionable minds watching the channel with the belief that they're merely being entertained. Naturally, this should also serve as an alert to parents-unless, of course, you're liberal or Democrat parents who enjoy or even encourage Nickelodeon to do the indoctrinating on your behalf so you won't have to dirty your own hands-because when they plop their children in front of SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer or iCarly, they have a right to expect no political indoctrination.

However, that ideal that parents have more than a right to expect no indoctrination is easier said than done because of two, adverse areas. One, as I wrote above, the president of Nickelodeon-Cyma Zarghami-is a hardcore, seriously dedicated Democrat and Democrat supporter. In 2004, she gave the maximum allowable under law to John "Swift Boat" Kerry for his failed presidential run that he ended up losing to President Bush. In 2007, Zarghami (perhaps because she likes the hard-luck cases) again picked a loser by donating the maximum allowable under law to Hillary Clinton in her failed run for president. Repulsively, Zarghami isn't content with simply being a hardcore Democrat and supporter who consistently picks the losers in political races...she like a typical liberal has to also let that bleed over into her job duties by infecting programming with pro-liberal causes.

This brings me to the second adverse area: Nickelodeon programming. While it seems innocuous enough with SpongeBob flipping burgers at the Krusty Krab (or whatever the heck he/she/it does), Nickelodeon's programming over the years has been infectiously rife with promoting serious liberal and Democrat platforms. This is also reflected in who they choose to interview or "honor" in their insignificant little Kids' Choice Awards.

In example, Michelle Obama-who's most infamous for saying America is mean and that she had never been proud of her country until Barry started doing well in 2008-is being "honored" this weekend by the channel because of her monumental, long-fought dedication to fighting children's obesity...which she's been on for the last...oh, I don't know...year, maybe year and one or two months, tops! Contrast that with the disrespectful snub of Laura Bush who solidly dedicated eight years to the cause of literacy and was never "honored" by Nickelodeon. Gee, I wonder if Cyma Zarghami's fiercely dedicated, Democrat leanings had anything to do with it?

Or take the case of Nickelodeon's global warming push onto impressionable kids. In December 2008, Nickelodeon actually bombarded kids with ads during their programming to go to a section of their website to proselytize them to reduce their frigging carbon footprint! That sounds like Al Gore built that section of Nickelodeon's website! Which he may well have done...after all, he invented the whole darn internet, so how easy would it have been for him to do that for Nickelodeon on their site?!

Still think, naively, that Nickelodeon is innocent and only cares about entertaining your kids? Take this next example: Remember Nick News and Linda Ellerbee? That "show" (read: indoctrination vehicle) has featured over the years the likes of Al Gore to talk about global warming, openly gay Rosie O'Donnell to talk about being "different" (read: homosexual), and in the most shocking example of anti-military, anti-Bush, liberal activism, a show about child protesters protesting the abuse at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, entitled "Rebels with a Cause."

All this string of facts clearly shows more than coincidence; it establishes a methodical, intentional plan by Nickelodeon, coming from the very top in the form of the hardcore Democrat they have as president there, to indoctrinate your kids. Ask yourselves this question, Do you really want your adult kids-after years of watching Nickelodeon as kids-running around as a bunch of poorly adjusted, Democrat-voting greeniacs who keep shouting, "Yes we can! Yes we can!" when they're not screaming about global warming?! Certainly not! It's up to you to decide if you want to boycott Nickelodeon, but even SpongeBob can't justify the presence of all this lib indoctrination.

I don't see anything wrong with the environmental stuff, and I don't see why people freak out so much over it. It's good for the environment, and its not hurting you. Doesn't matter if global warming's "real" or not, what's so wrong with cutting down on how we treat the earth.

As for other more economic political matters, I don't think they should be shoving down kid's throats. Especially through the tv shows. They're young and impressionable, and are not old enough to make their own choices, so the fact that they're doing that is wrong. I wouldn't mind, maybe, a news show once in awhile, but don't just use your liberal agenda. Show both sides and let them decide, and talk to their parents about it.

One thing I noticed, is I think Mr.Crabs from spongebob is being represented as that big evil corporations. One episode I saw, spongebob wanted to be nice to this lady who couldn't quite afford a sandwich and Mr.Crabs caught him and said he didn't want to "promote charity".

Here are a few examples: 1) Spongebob ran an episode on how combustion vehicles cause global warming and will ultimately destroy everything. When he world was destroyed, Spongebob yelled "hooray for big business." 2) In the show "Victorious," a character stated that global warming was bogus, to which another character responded, "stop watching FOX News." 3) There is a campaign on Nickelodeon called the Big Green Help which advertises methods for combating global warming. 4) Nick Jr. ran a homage to "dear leader" Obama. These are just a few. I'm sure there are more.

It's not too bad, it's definitely better than Disney. It's actually hard to see the indoctrination, but if you dig just a LITTLE below the surface, you will find it. Nick News is what opened my eyes.

I have noticed that Nickelodeon shows teach tolerance and acceptance. It's not a problem for me. I'm liberal and I actually watch shows WITH my children so I know what they are seeing. We discuss what is on the shows. I saw the ridiculous show Veggie Tales at someone else's house and banned it for my children because I don't want them being indoctrinated with christian mythology. We discussed this with our children and they were fine with it as those shows are not clever or interesting. If you actually take heed of what your children are watching and limit screen time this shouldn't be an issue. As the author of this article you are very insulting to those of us who are democrats. What is your problem? You look pretty ticked off in your picture. Anger management issues? Maybe you should have watched a little Sesame Street as a child.

First off, very well written article. That being said, I've been watching Nick since I was a munchkin myself, and I don't really see the issue. No kid in his right mind likes watching Linda Ellerbee. News is boring at that age, and Nick News is, too. I don't see teaching recycling as being a "Liberal Agenda," rather a good practice we could all get behind to save money and natural resources. I don't watch Kid's/Teen's Choice Awards, and therefore I have no right to comment on them.

This is the problem that I see with all of it. Parents are very good about letting their children watch tv and think that because it is "kids" tv that is has to be ok, that they wouldn't show anything controvesial or of a bad influence. I think if the parents took the time to sit down and watch the whole show with the child, there would be a lot more tv's turned off. To me Nick and Cartoon Network are the worst of all of them-for the political views that are pushed in there as well as the way they show kids it is "ok" to call names and treat others badly. We prefer the "old" cartoons-Scooby Doo and Tom and Jerry in our household-and yes, I know it is on Cartoon Network, but we are with her when she is watching it. It is called parent responsiblity, but thank you for exposing this!

  • Nik Minor3/29/2010

While it is certainly likely, I've yet to see it, though we only tune in to a few shows and never watch the Kid's Choice Awards.

  • Fern Fischer3/28/2010

My set had an off button, and I knew how to use it.

  • Freida Thomas3/28/2010

My opinion is that there are many influences out there, and yes I think Nic... is one of them that has the indoctrination of our children as their main agenda. Good job at exposing Marc!
