Is the No Stimulus Petition in Your Best Interest?

Are Americans for Prosperity Acting Against Your Prosperity

Brad Sylvester
I never cease to be amazed at how Americans can be manipulated to support ideas that are against their own self interest. In this case I am talking about the economic stimulus plan opposition being perpetrated on the American public by a group calling itself Americans for Prosperity. This Washington, D.C., lobbying group is signing up tens of thousands of Americans to support its No Stimulus Petition. On their website, this petition urges Senators to vote against President Obama's stimulus bill with phrases like "We can't spend out way to prosperity," and a slogan that says "Fight Special Interests that want to take away your Money." This group is acting in direct opposition to the economic interest of the average American and once again Americans are falling for it.

Why the Rich Might Support Americans for Prosperity

The economic stimulus plan as currently proposed puts money into the pockets of the average American. Lower and middle class Americans benefit the most with the largest tax relief and other benefits, such as the creation of millions of construction jobs as America rebuilds its crumbling infrastructure. This plan is designed to put people back to work, and lower their taxes to let them keep more of their money - unless they are already rich, of course. If you are already rich you don't need a job, and you won't benefit from the several thousands of dollars that average Americans might save in taxes. In fact, the rich might fear that they will have to pay their fair share for a change.

Main Street's Bailout Package

The rich can also afford to fund groups like Americans for Prosperity and the nostimulus.com website, although the list of donors to Americans for Prosperity wasn't readily available. In fact, the Americansforprosperity.org website was completely down at the time of the writing of this article, but you can find the full text of the not stimulus petition at the Chicago Daily Observer's website. The truth of the matter is that President Obama's economic stimulus plan is the Main Street bail out that many of these same Americans who have been duped into supporting this no stimulus petition were clamoring for just a few short weeks ago.

A Call for Change

If you want or more importantly need your taxes lowered this year, if you are worried about the security of your job, if you aren't sure you'll be able to buy a house or keep your home if you already own one, then supporting the No Stimulus Petition proposed by this Washington D.C. special interest group called Americans for Prosperity is the last thing you should be considering. Instead call or write your Senator to tell them what you are really concerned about, and ask them to help bail out Main Street and the average American for a change. After all, we elected them because we wanted things to change. We didn't want more trickle-down economics that favors the rich and the big corporation; we wanted our government back. Don't be fooled into lending your voice to those who oppose your best interests.

We are no longer a democracy where the majority rules. Republicans have begin an out right war to scare and manipulate those who are uninformed and uneducated to the policies proposed. People who the Republicans hope will do their dirty work. Supporting a mob mentality is nothing more than bullying and throwing temper tantrums for political sway and power. It's ironic that the very people who are screaming the loudest are the same people who would benefit from the stimulus and health care reform. The status quo is for big business and the insurance industry so they can continue raking in billions, change for something that would benefit all is for the American people in future jobs, better health for the land and lower insurance premiums with better and fairer service for all of us.

Stimulating discussion! I'm a Newbie who would appreciate feedback on my post on the latest news in the bail out. Also have an Easter greeting, Mother's Day and Earth Day stories that may tickle your fancy. Thank you!

Good article. I agree with your comment that the conservatives are using scare tactics to prevent the stimulus package from becoming law. The poor have been ignored and pushed aside long enough. The election of the democratic party in Congress and of President Obama ensure the end of the cold-blooded contempt of the poor by our Federal Government.

Good article, Brad. I'm hoping this passes. We can't place responsibility on the new administration then refuse to give them the tools they need. Personally, I think the tax break to those who are barely making it is a good thing. It helps those of us who barely make it have a few extra dollars for food and little things like a kid's birthday present.

Carole, you are misinformed. Several Senators who support the bill have gone on record today as saying that the wording of that provision is not what they intend and they will fix it. The opportunity for that comes during the House/ Senate negotiation to reconcile the two versions that were passed. The health care portion, by the way, represents less than one-quarter of one percent of the bills funding. I don't know where you studied economics but saying that a tiny portion of the bill doesn't create jobs so the bill won't create any jobs is unsound logic. This is a case of right wing scare tactics up to its old tricks again. Don't be fooled by this misdirection.

I don't know where you studied economics, but creating a package that includes health care provisions that require doctors to subscribe to a federal mandate is not creating jobs. It is giving the government the right to approve healthcare for people that fit their mold. Have you read the part about our seniors. They should "accept" the inevitable. I guess we need to save our money to cover illegals, and of course our goverment funded employees. If you don't have a purpose, will your healthcare be approved?

Does 1930's, 40's Germany ring a bell? Do NOT vote for this package.

Wake up people. This is not a stimulus package, and the healthcare package is not intended to help -- unless you're the "right" kind of person.

    Precisely Brad!
