Physical Characteristics of the Norwegian Buhund:
The Norwegian Buhund is a medium sized herding dog, with a square build and tight curly tail. The Buhund looks a little like the Spitz, but unlike the Spitz, the Norwegian Buhund's coat is either black or wheaton in color, not white. A typical male Norwegian Buhund will weigh between thirty-one and forty pounds and a typical female will be smaller weighing between twenty-six and thirty-five pounds.
Temperament of the Norwegian Buhund:
The Norwegian Buhund is a self confident, alert and lively dog that is known for being very affectionate towards people. The Buhund is intelligent and typically easy to train. The Norwegian Buhund is also a herding dog, who needs a "job to do" or he will get bored and then you can encounter some trouble. The buhund is also a great watch dog, with a strong intense bark.
Who Should Own a Norwegian Buhund?
The best owners for the Norwegian Buhund are those who are willing to take the time to exercise this energetic dog. The Norwegian Buhund requires a great deal of exercise. A fenced in back yard, that allows the Buhund space to run, is best. The Buhund is probably not the dog for those with dog allergies or those who hate having dog hair around, as the Buhund can shed a great deal. The Norwegian Buhund can make a great family pet. They are generally very good with children. One thing to note about the Buhund is that the Buhund is one breed of dog who needs companionship. If you work long hours and want a dog you can leave alone at home all day, the Buhund is not the dog for you.
How can I get a Norwegian Buhund in the United States?
Unfortunately, there are not many breeders of Norwegian Buhunds in the United States. Also, those who do breed Norwegian Buhund puppies can charge upwards of $1,000. My advice if you have your heart set on the Norwegian Buhund is to contact a breeder listed under the Norwegian Buhund Club of America.
