Is it OK to Skip Valentine's Day?

Bel Marshall
I keep hearing a common theme among many of my female clients. It seems there are many men out there who have decided that Valentine's Day does not need to be acknowledged so they simply ignore the holiday. Some say it's nothing more than way for greeting card companies to make money, others claim they shouldn't need a holiday to express their feelings for another person.

While both excuses may sound good in your head, I strongly suggest that you do not attempt either of these excuses. After talking with both men and women about these ideas, here is what some had to say about the Valentine's Day excuses.

One Should Not Need A Holiday To Show How They Feel:

I asked a couple of men about this excuse and the overall response was pretty clear. "He doesn't care enough to do anything." Yes, gentlemen this came from three different men from different walks of life. While expressing your love and affection in various ways every day sounds great, purposely skipping it on Valentine's Day does not more than put you in the insensitive jerk category.

As much as we would all like to have the time, energy, interest and yes, sometimes even the money to be romantic everyday this is not the norm for most people. Life gets in the way and we all get lax in remembering to show the person in our life how much they matter to us every day. There are few women who are going to really appreciate this gesture and many will take it very personally.

It's A Way For Greeting Card Companies To Make Money Excuse:

The overall attitude from women when this excuse is used seems to be that the man is either lazy or just plain cheap.

One woman suggested that if he is really opposed to spending money then the man can make his lady a card, make her dinner, do something extra for her. Women don't care that it's a holiday created to make money, women don't care that the man hates this holiday, what she does care about it that Valentine's Day is important to her and she wants to feel that she is important to the man in her life. Find another way to celebrate the day if you don't want to spend money but do not think you will be at the top of her list for best boyfriend or husband if you just ignore the holiday.

You don't have to participate in the commercialism of the day and if you are the guy who shows your lady every single day how much you adore her, then you get extra points but don't think you will get away with skipping over Valentine's Day.

February 15, women get on the phone and call their friends to find out who did what on Valentine's Day. By human nature we all like to believe that we have the best man out there but the one who skips the holiday for any reason is the one who gets kicked to the bottom of the list.

Valentine's Day for many women is not about who gets the biggest gift but who gets the best gift. What determines the best gift? The amount of thought and care that goes into the gift.
