Is it Okay If My Poop is Green?

Jimmy Smith
Green poop can be alarming and distressing to somebody that has never had green poop before. Should you be alarmed if you have green poop? Should you call 911? Should you be on the way to the hospital right now? No, green poop is perfectly normal and no cause for immediate alarm. Green poop can be caused by a number of things. For instance if you eat green foods, or if you eat something with a lot of dye in it. It could also be caused by eating too much iron.

Another cause for green poop could be parasites living inside of you, but this is only the case if you consistently have green poop over time. Don't get alarmed every time you poop green and think you have parasites, but just be wary of the fact that it could be parasites. Green poop can be a serious medical condition, but it is usually not at all anything serious to worry about.

It has happened to me a lot of times where people who have never pooped green before have came to me and quietly asked me if they were OK. I usually reassured them that they were okay, and if they didn't believe me to Google it. It is especially alarming to young kids, who often get very upset at the sight of something different after they go to the bathroom.

One cause for alarm is if your poop is black or red, this could mean that you are bleeding internally and you will need to seek medical advice as soon as possible. Poop that is black means your are bleeding from your stomach and that could be a very dangerous thing. Poop that is bright red may not be as dangerous, but you should still see a health care professional as soon as possible if there is any evidence of blood in your stool.

In conclusion, green poop is usually nothing to worry about, and usually is dye in food or eating too much iron. It could also be bile from your liver, or a stomach parasite. If you are pooping green for more then a few days, or if you have been pooping green consistently and can not identify the source as food dye or any medications you should contact your health care provider. Green poop could be something serious and should not always be taken lightly and be the butt of jokes. No pun intended.
