Is Online Digital Photography School for You ?

Rebecca Furtado
There are many people these days that have become shutter bugs. The advent of the digital camera and the ability with social networking sites has made digital photography a very popular hobby and career choice. Many of us even after we invest in simple to use digital cameras want to improve our photography skills. Taking a course can be a good idea to get started in photography as a career or simply to improve our skills for family photos.

There are really only two choices out there for both the professional and the amateur digital photographer to improve their craft. One is to attend in person a class at a local vocational school or college. This can be a big decision for any shutter bug, the course tend to be expensive. A few years ago my son took a class at a local arts center.

It was a wonderful course, but it cost around five hundred dollars. In this time of recession that is a lot of money for anyone to put out for a hobby. Even if you plan to try photography professionally the only way to receive significant financial aid for this career is to pursue at least an associate degree in Digital Photography or a related field. Schools offering this kind of training are few and far between. Taking on student loan debt for a field that does not require a degree is a big decision that each photography student has to make.

The second option is to take digital photography courses online. Programs vary from one's that offer live training in an online class room via chat and white board training to self directed study. The best online school will offer you a live person to direct your studies and critique your work. Many of these schools also offer course on setting up your photography business and making money with your photos. This is a good option for people looking to become professional photographers as it is all practice education geared towards getting your business off the ground. Hobbyist can find the right courses as well, without having to learn skills that they do not want or need.

Check out online courses and know your learning style. If you are self motivated then self directed study may work for you. These programs tend to be less expensive than the more traditional online classroom motif. Good luck and enjoy your journey in to the world of digital photography

I live in a small city in the midwest. I am the pet parent to four cats, two birds , and one lonely dust bunny dog named Nigel. I have two human children. They are both teenagers and I occasionally see them.  View profile
