How do you plan on paying for your education? With online universities there is limited financial aid. While you still can usually get student loans they are typically at a higher interest rate than what you would get at a traditional university. You will also not have access to grants, work study and certain other financial aid with an online college like you would with a traditional college or university. If your employer is paying for your college or you want to pay or take out loans then you may be okay with an online school.
What are you interested in studying? You may not be able to find an online school that offers the program you are interested in majoring in. In order for an online university to be a good choice for you there will need to be an online school that offers what you are interested in.
How are your time management skills? With an online university, it will be your responsibility to get online when you need to and complete your assignments as they are due. If you are prone to procrastination or lack motivation you may not do well in an online class. You have to be responsible enough to keep up with the course work.
Do you work well with others? Online degree programs typically utilize a lot of group assignments. Due to the lack of a classroom and regular interaction with others a number of online degree programs have group work built into the curriculum. This means have to utilize conference calls, group chats and the like to communicate with group members that could be in a different state or even a different country.
Do you need or want to work full-time while in school? If you need or want to work full-time while in school then an online degree program is probably a good choice for you. With traditional programs you have to go to campus for class and while schools do offer night classes you will likely have to go to campus during the day for a class or two. With an online degree program you can work full-time as you can do your course work whenever you want during the day.
Is the school accredited? Before signing up to attend an online university you will want to check the accreditation of the school. Some online schools are accredited and some are not. Some employers will want to see that you went to an accredited school. And if you plan on continuing your education later on you will need a degree from an accredited school.
Are you worried about online degree stigma? If you get an online degree you may encounter some employers or others that look down on online degrees. If you are interested in getting a degree to further your career you may want to first see if there is a stigma in your industry when it comes to online degrees.
Do you have a reliable computer and high speed internet access? To be successful in an online degree program you will need to have access to a reliable computer with high speed internet access. Most tests that you will take online will be timed, which is why dial-up internet access will not be sufficient.
Do you learn best on your own? With online education programs you will be spending most of your time reading things. However, with a traditional degree program you would be sitting in class hearing lectures. If you learn best by having things explained to you like in a lecture then you may not do well in an online degree program. With an online degree program you will be reading and teaching yourself in most instances.
How long do you want to spend in school? Some online degree programs allow you to accelerate your learning so that you can have your 4 year degree in less than 4 years. However, some online degree programs take longer than 4 years. You should evaluate how long you want to be in school and then have a look at the length of the online degree programs you are interested in. That will help you to make a good decision.
