Is Oprah Really Stepping Down in 2011?

Buying Her Own Channel and Moving Her Show, Oprah's Fans Can Still See Her Daily

Is Oprah really calling it quits or is this just another stunt like Jay Leno? Of course she's not stepping down. We're not falling for that lady!

Amazingly, Oprah is announcing today, she's stepping down from daytime talk, however she's going to start a different show on her own channel. Well this sounds like the same thing Jay Leno did when he said he was leaving late night. He didn't leave, he's the same just in a different time slot.

Now Oprah's doing the same thing. Same show, different channel.

Bonnie Hunt, host of The Bonnie Hunt Show, didn't look overly excited by the news Oprah was stepping down. Why should she be? It's just a shift to a different channel and that's not something anyone is going to fall off their chair for.

Do we really think there will be anything different? Is she stepping aside so Tyra Banks can take over? Is Oprah tired of the fluff and going to do more hard hitting stories like she did when she started? Leno's new show was a lot of hype and nothing different and my gut tells me this is the same thing.

Let's face it, I am tired of watching shows about celebrities and their lives which don't pertain to me. They have too much money, funds I'll never have, troubles that I can't relate to because I'm not followed by paparazzi all day and I can't get what I want when I want. Trying to show celebrities as normal people just isn't cutting it since we don't live in multi-million dollar houses. I don't want to hear any more sob stories about a family who had an obscure tragedy that will never happen again in a million years. I want to learn something that specifically relates to me.

Remember the year Oprah said she was only going to do positive stories? That was when I quit watching her every day. Although I like to be positive, I also want to have information, good or bad, which I can use to better my life and sometimes you have to peel back the fluff to get to the issue. In the beginning, I started watching her because her topics related to me, my family and what we could do to improve our lives. They were interesting, fun and informative. Now it's just a bunch of fluff Oprah thinks we need to know.

I don't think making a big announcement through tweeting or publicity such as this is exciting in any way. In fact, it's really ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I like Oprah just as much as the next guy, but can't we have something more substantial? Seems like it would have been better to say, "Hey guys, I'm buying my own channel because I have loads of money and I can. I'm moving my show to the Oprah Channel!" Now there's the actual truth.

After we get past the twisted version, we understand Oprah's not stepping down, she's just changing location. She's not even moving over since she'll still reign supreme in daytime talk. The hierarchy will continue and her fans will be loyal.

Nothing different except the addition of another channel to cable TV. And that my dear, is the long and short of the situation.

  • Oprah isn't quitting her daytime talk show, she's moving it over to her own cable channel
  • The announcement of calling it "quits" is more hype then truth for Oprah
  • There is no reason to panic, fans of Oprah will still be able to watch her show
This is the second time Oprah has announced she's stepping down from her show, but this time, she's just moving it to her own cable channel.
