Some people have tried out Linux and wonder if using Linux for gaming is possible. While it is possible there are still some limitations that you should be aware of when trying to play games this way.
First, you must have hardware that is supported. Some companies have open drivers and some have closed ones. If your hardware is all closed drivers, you won't be able to game on your system through Linux as your performance will be awful. Realistically, you need open drivers or at least ones that will work with Linux.
If you want to play games on Linux, the best way to start out is to use the program called WINE. This program will help you run certain Windows commands and execute programs that otherwise would not work on Linux. WINE can help you run certain games. You can check the website and see which games work and which don't. Do not expect to run the latest games smoothly at least until a patch comes out to help it run better on Linux.
You can also purchase some Linux installers that are designed to put Windows games onto your system. Generally there is some patching done to help the game install and run properly. These do help the games run properly but many don't like the idea of having to pay for a program when they likely can already use the same game on Windows which they already own.
Because of many of these limitations, many gamers won't like the performance or options available in Linux at the time being. The progress of Linux being a gaming system is much closer now than ever though.
