Is it Possible Nevada Voters Will Elect Sharron Angle?

The Tea Party candidates running around the country have distinguished themselves as uninformed and radical tools of a corporate political machine preying on an undercurrent of fear to expand their power. No candidate demonstrates this as much as Nevada's Sharron Angle.

It's easy to understand voter frustration, especially with Harry Reid. The Senate Majority Leader too often caved to the right and was far too moderate for progressives. And just the fact that he is responsible for helping some of President Obama's agenda get through the Senate is enough to draw the hate of the far right.

But is any of that enough to send her to the United States Senate? Politically, Sharron Angle won't answer questions, doesn't offer any solutions except to promise to obstruct, and has a resume with holes big enough to drive a truck through. In most years, those shortcomings would be enough to keep her from winning. But alas, this is no normal year.

It just takes a look at the little she does articulate to understand her positions are not just wrong, but lacking sense or a basis in fact. For example, she wants to "save the economy by defunding Obamacare" and attacking it as "government takeover." while just down the page she says we have to protect Tricare, the government program providing health care to military members and their families.

So why isn't she surging far ahead of Harry Reid? Because even in a year of widespread (if misplaced) voter anger and dissatisfaction, Sharron Angle holds positions that cause thinking Nevadans to recoil in horror. Her mocking of persons with autism is just one example.

She wants to do away with Medicare and Social Security, as well as the Department of Education. Angle wants the United States to withdraw from the United Nations, calling the body "the umpire on fraudulent science such as global warming."

As for Nevada and energy, she wants to make sure Nevada becomes the dumping place for nuclear waste. She favors building more coal fired electric plants in a state blanketed by sun much of the year and a potential gold mine for solar power.

The questions Nevadans have to ask themselves need to center around how they want their state represented. It's never fun to have to, as the saying goes, "choose the lesser of two." But that's a real concern in the elections of 2010. The far right is making a run at America, and the entire country will suffer the consequences if they win.

Polls have been bouncing around for weeks, some with Reid in the lead, some with Angle - most within the margin of error. What will decide the vote? Just who shows up, and who, within their own mind and in front of their own ballot, cannot vote for the despicable caricature that is Sharron Angle.
