Is This the Real Face of Jesus? the History Channel Investigates

Is This Image What Jesus May Have Actually Looked Like? Has Science and Religion Aligned?

Click on the image and see what you think. This past Saturday night, the History Channel presented an extraordinary effort in trying to reveal what the face looked like, in three dimensions, which has been hidden in the Shroud of Turin in Is This the Real Face of Jesus. This is the furthest that science has advanced in its technological endeavor to decipher the face in the Shroud. Is this the first time that both science and religion have intersected to reveal that this might be the very picture of Christ, or at least, the closest look at anyone since the Apostles, have had to actually see the face of Jesus?

Computer technology has added the third dimension and with generally accepted color schemes for the body: hair, eyebrows, and even the bloodied body. It is a fact that the image was not painted, nor dyed, nor made by any human effort. Ray Downing, the computer artist says that this is about as close as you can get to it actually looking like the very person that was wrapped in the shroud. The Shroud was transformed by computer imaging and color scheme graphics or digital artists to produce a 3-D image from the 2-D image contained within the Shroud.

This may be the first look at what Jesus may have actually looked like and in fact still does look like, minus the glorified state that He is in today. When I saw the full frontal picture of His face, I started to cry and fell on my face, for some unexplained reason and my thoughts were, "My Lord and my God". That was my gut reaction. The image may or may not look like it is your idea of what Jesus looked like, but it is the closest image that anyone to this date has ever been able to see.

Do I believe the Shroud of Turin is authentic? I do believe it is the more I hear and read about it. It really doesn't matter because I believe that Jesus Christ did and still does exist. Does this show build my faith? Yes, I must admit. Do I believe that this scientifically and technologically produce image is what Jesus Christ looked like? I think it does, but even if I didn't, my belief in Him would not be altered. But take a close look at the image and see what you think, Christian or not. I am more convinced after watching the History Channel's The Real Face of Jesus that we may be seeing for the first time in nearly 2,000 years, what Jesus may have actually looked like. But my faith does not depend upon this image or the evidence of science. It is independent of it or anything I can see or read, for faith is a gift from God (Rom 4:5, 5:1) and this faith's source is not from me (Eph. 2:8). Jesus does exist and eventually, every eye will see Him, just as He is. I hope and pray that before every eye sees Him, they will be longing for Him appearance as their Savior and Lord, and not as their Judge.

After more than two years on the site is this still your top earning article?

The photo is very similar to other photos of Jesus. I wonder if that played a role in what the History Channel determined to be the face of Jesus?

Excellent suggestions; ♥ thanks for sharing. Many years ago we were traveling with the kids. The church we passed had many stained glass windows of different saints - I remember the kids wondering if the artists all had a different idea of what Jesus really looks like. I believe He looks like love :)

Regardless of whether or not the Shroud is genuine, it reminds us that Jesus was flesh as well as the Son of God. It hits home more, to see what may be a real representation of Him.

I love this scripture about how Jesus looked, Isaiah 53:3 states of Christ that he had "no beauty that we should desire Him." And this makes sense, that Jesus would not want to be a stumbling block of lust to anyone. God bless.

Yes, Jack, it doesn't matter whether that's what Jesus looked like or not... I'm content with what I picture Him to be by reading His Words, with how I regard Him in my life (Lord & Saviour). What really matter is how I live my life for His glory, in full anticipation of what it will really be like seeing him eye to eye. :-)

I've always found it interesting that God's Spirit chose not to reveal specific bodily characteristics of Christ. Can you imagine what we'd have if He had? "It says in Matthew 83:12 that Jesus had green eyes! All you blue eyed people better get green contacts if you want to be like Him! Oh, and He was 6'2" so short people better start wearing elevator shoes!" Ok, so, maybe it might not have been that extreme. (just having some fun there. Please, don't try to find the 83rd chapter of Matthew!)
Like you, Jack, the image doesn't prove or disprove anything with me. I believe in Jesus through faith. The Scriptures speak of Him... and I can't wait for our "iris-2-iris" meeting one day. :)
