Is it Right for Private or Religious Schools to Kick Out Gay Students?
Schools May Be Discriminating but They Say It's Freedom of Speech
If this school were a public school they probably would get reprimanded for an uncalled for act like kicking out a student. However private schools take advantage at the fact that they believe they can set up there own rules on how students should behave morally and have justification for them. The truth of the matter is that any school that kicks out a student for their sexual orientation is discrimination. It would be the same thing if the school were to kick out a student for being black, or being another religion like Jewish or Atheist.
Schools have no say in which the students choose to be, that is just no their place. Schools are supposed to be an institution that educates, motivates, encourages, and teach understanding and equality. Students should be able to feel safe in a school environment and not harassed on who they are no matter what kind of school it is. There are many students that attend a school that is religiously based and is not of that religion. However, these students usually don't get expelled for it.
So in the case of the gay student getting kicked out of school was it the school's right to do so? The school may have thought they had the right to do a tasteless act but in a democratic society it is discrimination and a form of hatred. The concept of free speech is different from hate speech. This young student who was a honors student now has to start over just because he displayed who he was publicly.
It is sad to think that even in the year 2006 so much discrimination against sexual orientation is still happening, but one thing is for sure these generations of students aren't going to tolerate it. People of all creeds including gays and lesbians should be able to be who they are in public and not get consequences for it. Hopefully this teen will win his case if he decides to take this to court. As for the school, maybe students at that campus will advocate that their school is being biased against homosexuals and protest. For that matter if any discrimination of any kind happens on any campus students should rally together because in great numbers they usually have the upper hand especially when the students are in the right of things. Only time will tell if things like homophobia or racism will ever disappear in our society, but when there is a lot of ignorance in our world things like that seem impossible.

Post a CommentIf your kid is gay.....well, it's one thing to believe that being gay is against your religion, but to prevent their entry into a school which may or may not be better academically than other public schools is just wrong. Everyone has the right to an education, no matter what their sexual orientation. Now I know some idiot is going to counter this by sayin, "Well, there's no such right to a PRIVATE education, they shouldn't have been going to a school they knew opposed it", blah blah blah. Why should they have to run the risk of getting an inferior education, just because they're gay? This really doesn't make any sense. I'm not overly passionate about this, mostly because I've never known or heard firsthand of anyone being expelled from any school for their sexuality, but after reading this I was kinda mad. We as society have the responsibility to see to it that the youth are prepared for whatever destiny they have, be it flipping burgers or being a top doctor, and this doesn't fit in.
"Private schools have the right to discriminate on the basis of behavior. There is nothing else to be said".
What an utter and complete moron to say such an ignorant thing. I hope that whoever wrote this ends up discovering that their son or daughter is homosexual (not by choice either), and they see the pain and suffering that the world throws at them.
This person is a complete and utter ignoramous.
We have complete equality in the UK now, and people such as these are taken to court as soon as they open their uniformed mouths with bigotry..and rightly so. I am uterly nauseated reading the comment.... just who the bloody hell do they think they are? Noone is allowed to be educated except Heterosexuals??
I am utterly FUMING!!
.
What about people with sexual preferences for pedophilia and exhibitionism? Can a person help that inclination? What about a person who is addicted to viewing and sharing pornography? Or what about a case of overactive heterosexuality, such as a football player in my high school who had a publicly state goal to get as many girls pregnant as he could?
Perhaps we need to distinguish between sexual inclinations and sexual behavior. We all have urges we act on and those we dont. Does a school have the right to punish a teacher or student for their inclinations or desires? Do they have the right to discipline them for acting out on those desires? Also, how do our actions on those desires influence our future inclinations?
As a black American, I do not equate sexual preference with being black. I do not choose to be black I am born that way. I cannot compromise in any way to hide or masquerade my race for convenience. It is not the same so please do not equate the two as the same. I have seen people change their preference for jobs and/or acceptance; I do not have this luxury so how can it be the same.

I belive that it is wrong. You cant help who you are, or who you like.So why should they have the right to denie you the right to a education.
As a bisexual mother, I cannot help but believe this is wrong. My children are aware of my orientation and are free to chose as they will.
