Is Robert Carlyle on Track to Become the Next Doctor Who?

Timothy Sexton
Robert Carlyle may soon be saving the galaxy from beings such as Cybermen and Sontarans. According to reports, current overrated Doctor Who David Tennant is mulling over the very real possibility of trading in the TARDIS for good. Since the Doctor is a Timelord capable of regenerating himself, he has been played by a tremendous number of actors over a tremendous number of years. Except in recent polls apparently dominated by IMDB Daily Poll participants, the legendary Tom Baker has always been considered the quintessential Doctor Who. After a brief sojourn, Doctor Who returned in a blaze of glory, played by the magnificent Christopher Eccleston before regenerating into the bland David Tennant. The idea of the otherworldly Robert Carlyle becoming the Doctor is enough to make me start watching the show again.

Robert Carlyle blasted to fame alongside Ewan McGregor in one of the ten best movies of the 1990s: Trainspotting. Carlyle played the psychotic Begbie in that movie, and used its success to launch him into memorable roles in such movies as The Fully Monty, The World is Not Enough, and 28 Weeks Later. He also assayed the role of young Adolf Hitler in a searing CBS miniseries. Perhaps his greatest claim to fame among some was his leading role in the British series Hamish MacBeth.

The very idea of Robert Carlyle playing Doctor Who should be enough to instill a bottomless well of hope in those who quickly grew weary of David Tennant spending his entire regime searching for some kind of way to distinguish the Doctor from his past generations. Christopher Eccleston did something that hadn't been done before by giving the Doctor a tough physicality, but his tenure was way too short. Step in Robert Carlyle who has proven himself capable of both volcanic temper and low self-esteem problems. Robert Carlyle's could very well take Doctor Who where no man has gone before.

if anyone can describe tennant's portrayal of the doctor as bland he must have been watching a different show, he made it funny, exciting and at times heartwrenching, i wouldn't mind seeing carlyle do it but whoever wrote that above slating david tennt's take on the role needs a lesson in how to recognise bloody good acting!

I love Tennant as Who, but was weened on Baker, to which Tennant does a great homage. Where ever the series goes, I'll follow. Heck, I still get the old '70s stuff from Netfilx, both CD and instant. The premise is outstanding and the writers over the years have been of the highest notables.

But at least I mentioned two popular shows in one comment so Google better take notice. I find Robert Carlye intriguing and if anyone out in Google Land sees this comment indexed, they are advised that the article is a zillion times better than the comment. :)

I'll have to tell my husband. He is totally addicted to Dr. Who. I thought the show was a bit bizarre at first but it has grown on me. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dr. Who...it can happen in one day and I'm trying to find any continuity there...but I can't.

It's jarring when the Doctor changes, but then the new one kind of grows on you. It took me a while to warm up to David Tennant as the Doctor. I also love Robert Carlyle. Thanks for the info!
