Is "Rookie Blue" the Next "Grey's Anatomy"?

The new ABC show "Rookie Blue" has a lot of similarities with the network's previous hit "Grey's Anatomy." Now the only question is, are viewers sick of the same old story lines, or will they be intrigued by the different occupation that these characters pursue?

"Rookie Blue" features a set of newcomers to a police force and starts out fittingly with their first day on the job. Viewers can see that they are very green to the experience, and their chief starts out by saying that nothing they have done in the academy matters now. Nothing could ever prepare them for this job because every situation is different and the only way to become a better cop is to gain more experience.

In comparison, "Grey's Anatomy" also started out with a cast that was starting their first day of work as surgical interns. It was interesting to see the mistakes that they made and how they were fixed, along with the drama that went on outside of the hospital.

There are other similarities between "Grey's Anatomy" and "Rookie Blue." In both of the shows, the rookies compete. In "Grey's Anatomy" it was for surgeries, and in "Rookie Blue" it's for arrests. Another thing that the shows have in common is the characters having parents who also were in the same line of work, allowing them to be more notable among senior staff members and their peers.

It also appears that romances are going to be blossoming on "Rookie Blue" between rookies and their superior officers. In the first episode, one of the rookies is in fact already in a relationship with a detective. In the second episode, another rookie almost gets kissed by a superior. The preview for the following week, leaves viewers with the impression that the pair is going to cross the line in that episode.

There are many similarities between "Rookie Blue" and "Grey's Anatomy," which just leaves one to wonder if this new show is going to be as successful as the last one. This is definitely a new perspective on police drama and differs from other shows because it's not all about detective work. It depicts some of the more sentimental moments that rookie police officers might go through when they are just starting out. These differences definitely make the show appeal to a younger audience, and they will probably get hooked on it.

I've been enjoying Rookie Blue on Hulu, but so far the characters don't seem to have the same charisma as Grey's. It's been getting better as it goes, though!
