Unlike martial arts which is a more systematic approach to the study of specific form of combat, self defense is base on a current danger that may require some amount of techniques not as elaborate and physical to learning and practicing martial arts. So why not consider self defense for yourself and/or children protection.
While not supporting violence of any kind, this form of protection has worked for others...both young and not so young. With this in mind, you should also know that to be successful you will need to research and know much more about exercising and physical work-out. Daily exercise, especially stretching, is recommended. Healthy eating and drinking are added positive requirements for success. The right state of mind and spirit also matter a lot for consistency and sustainability. Simple body movements like sit-ups will help before the more difficult physical exercises.
But even more important are some characteristics to take into account when you are thinking about the above endeavor. As you conduct your research and get advice, remember to evaluate and decide for your self if the self-defense class content is positive and appropriate for you, the child age group and others interested. Look at the social aspect of the program to discover if the teacher or instructor is clear about what are being done correctly or not, and if he/she is respectful and flexible. Examine whether the program is more action-oriented or talking-oriented, because you are likely to remember more action than talk. Make sure the process is design for your personal success or that of the children or your friends. Distinguish between the program traditional martial arts format and practical self-defense, because it is the latter you will be interested in. Follow your mind or instinct if you are uncomfortable about anything, speak-up and get advice/help.
Especially for children, they will learn best if their teacher is a calm person, has a safety-first mentality, and will encourage them to do easy things first for as long as necessary. Self-defense classes base on a comprehensive variety of fields including mental health, education, crime prevention, law enforcement, and others are more likely to be attractive than the narrow-focused programs. Another important support feature to look for is endorsement from credible organizations and professionals. Avoid the "best and only way" programs that are usually not the best at all. Be smart and be cautious as your investigate.
One of the best ways to decide about many things in life is to ask others about their experience and recommendation. Self-defense has helped others overcome stressful periods in their lives. Internal strength, inner composure and confidence will grow as you become more ware of what you have learned and what you are empowered with to protect yourself. Children in particular will face childhood and high school violent situations right through their school days. Self-defense will help them face-up to the bully or school student-boss who may seek to unfairly get the better of them. Parents often feel better when their children are capable of defending themselves in some format or another. This point is often the central talking point when considering teaching a child not to talk to, go with and be afraid of strangers. Self-defense can help to improve someone social life. As self respect and courage grows from knowing how to be safer, it can be translated and the source communicated to others. The more friends receive this kind of needed assistance the better and the good news bearer becomes popular.
Parents, their children, friends and neighbors who have faced some form of violent situation or another, can consider a self-defense class this year as a possible helpful solution. The benefits for children especially will last all the days of their lives. Courage, confidence, strength and greater friendships are just some of the benefits. The process is not difficult, but discipline and confidence are important for success.
