Is She Really Going Out with Him - a Guilty Pleasure, but a Pleasure Nonetheless

Steven Moneyworth
The other day, I turned on MTV and was introduced to the new show "Is She Really Going Out With Him?". I was intrigued by the premise of calling out guys that are jerks and mistreat their girlfriends, so I kept watching. And I was pleased.

I'm going to keep using the term "jerk" in this article because I feel it's more family friendly and is unlikely to turn off readers. Were I to describe the guys from "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" in a conversation with friends, I would not use this term. These are guys that do nothing all day and live off of their girlfriends' incomes. These are guys that spend an hour gelling up their hair in a comical fashion that they think looks good. These are guys that go to parties and flirt and make out with other women. To use the term "jerk" is to be gentle.

The nice thing is that the show itself is not gentle at all. Half an hour is spent ridiculing, mocking, and calling out these terrible boyfriends for all the wrongs for which they are responsible. In this way, the show has a similar premise to VH1's "Tool Academy." However, the point of this show is not to save the relationships of these couples. "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is really more about taking a look into the dynamics of these relationships, which are almost always on the rocks. Watching this show makes me feel like the best boyfriend ever. I think for any non-jerk, the show would have the same effect. It also makes me appreciate my own girlfriend more.

The guys on this show are often unemployed or have their girlfriends sustain their lifestyles. They brag to their friends about how they manage to live off of their girlfriends' money. One guy, who was unemployed and whose girlfriend was a nurse working constantly to pay for his lifestyle, faked going to a job interview that his girlfriend set up for him. Basically, it's hard to feel bad for the guys on this show. They deserve some public degradation.

I might consider "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" to be a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I'd still recommend it. I like people-watching, and if a show is going to be broadcast wherein jerks are mocked and degraded, that's probably the ideal people-watching situation.

I really get a kick out of hearing them be degraded. I'm glad there is a show that ridules people that are like that. At the same time, I get so mad that they think that they can get a free ride. Those are the people that abuse tax payer dollars. I hate knowing that a portion of my hard earned money goes to jerks like that. Good article.

I accidentally watched this show the other night;-) I kind of liked it too, because at least it points how what jerks these guys are..though the women who date them are just as much to blame!
