Is Socialism America's Answer?

Fabienne Hernandaise
People almost immediately translate socialism into communism, and communism furthermore into evil. World history has taught us of the vileness of Stalin, Castro, and Kim Jong II, all communist leaders. Chavez has not ordered anybody to be killed yet, but continues down the path of socialism. Sometimes we need to listen to our enemies and see why they operate the way they do.

Inevitably, world powers will rise and fall as the sun will continue to rise and set. The United States will take have to step down from the throne sooner or later. In an ever changing technological world we live in, capitalism is not always the answer. It emphasizes the Darwinist theory of survival of the fittest, leaving government out of the scope of economics. Then what is the purpose of government if it cannot regulate commerce adequately to give everybody a fair chance?

In the United States today, the wealthier are getting wealthier, the poorer are getting poorer, and the middle class is not budging. This trend is bound to cause disaster eventually. If socialism is applied to the United States mildly, it can begin to change for the better, truly defining "with liberty and justice for all". To blatantly put it, I do not care how many amendments you can find or court cases you can point out that have enhance equality in America, there still is not. There are tons of loop holes in the system and people get discriminated.

Socialism can begin in the classroom. Everybody knows that the way to penetrate the government is through the children of the nation, the potential future of America. If they are taught socialism to be right, they will embrace it and keep radiating it throughout their lives. When I use the term socialism, I do not mean a Castro-style oppressive system or like that of Stalin's where people who spoke against the government were shot. It is more of a Democratic Socialism that would fit the United States.

Imagine top of the line public transit, universal healthcare, banishment of private schools, public schools that only produce the most intelligent erudite pupils, virtually no crime thanks to top notch police units. Think everything federalized. The government would control certain big businesses from getting too strong, just like Theodore Roosevelt did in the early 1900s. It sounds like an impossible utopia, but really it is not, because in a utopia people do not make mistakes.

Besides that point, history tells us that socialism in fact indeed work well for the Soviet Union and its satellites. It is easy to argue against that by saying that the USSR eventually fell, but that was because the socialist system was being abused and too much power was in the hands of one person and the nation was not meeting the needs of people. That is what has to be heard first, what people want. Equality should be the norm. We should not have only Hispanics picking tomatoes out in California; every race should fill every job equally. Otherwise, we are back to capitalism and every man for himself.

The United Socialist States of America sounds very catchy to me in my opinion. The 21st century is currently having the table of world economics being flipped by communist China and look at Russia now; it is more backward than it was during the Cold War. Maybe we should learn from the nations are our enemies that we as Americans have been made to believe by the media. Who is with me?

it may not be a school's job to tell children that political system is "right or wrong," but it does it every day through government approved textbooks.

Do you really think, Chadd, that schools do not influence how children think? Do you think that those who write history books that are used as textbooks for our children do not influence the way those children perceive the world.
    Think a little deeper.

So you're a big proponent of the fairness doctrine then, eh?

Yes, it is not their job; but it does so anyway. All my life in school in the US I have been taught that democracy is good and communism is evil.

I'm sorry, it's not a school's job to tell children a political system is right or wrong.
