Is Your Sunscreen Ruining Your Nail Polish? Sunscreens that Are Nail Polish Safe

Mary Lamphere
Sunscreen is a very heavy compound that is formulated to be naturally difficult to dissolve. Unfortunately, some of us women find that as the summer months roll around and we break out the sunscreen our nail polish begins to suffer. Have you noticed that your sunscreen is having a negative effect on your nail polish?

Nail polish can be removed with acetone and other chemicals which are known as emulsifiers as reported by The Beauty Brains. Unfortunately, many of the same ingredients that are found in nail polish removers are also found in sunscreens. So, what this means is that certain sunscreens, when applied to the nails which are polished will act as removers causing the polish to become a sticky mess. (in most cases the ingredients are not actually strong enough to make the polish come completely off)

The key here--find some sunscreen that includes the necessary Sun Protection Factor or SPF without the added chemical emulsifiers that will break down your manicure. Here are some sunscreens that are safe for use on those beautifully polished nails.

UV Natural Sunscreens: These are available online and boast the claim that the sunscreen is eco friendly and people friendly. The sunscreens will not cause your manicure to become a sticky polish mess and they are available in SPF 30 and above making them a great choice for most beach bathers.

Mexitan All Natural Sunscreen: This sunscreen is all natural and emulsifier free. It actually uses a base of zinc oxide rather than some of the other more common chemicals that are usually found in sunscreen. Mexitan is 100% bio degradable and safe for parks that require the use of safe sunscreens to prevent harm to animals or plants throughout the region. This sunscreen will not harm the nail polish on your beautiful manicure.

Caribbean Solutions: For a slightly lower sunscreen SPF protection, Caribbean Solutions comes in a factor of 18. This sunscreen is biodegradable and safe for use on polished nails. Not only will it keep your nail polish on and not sticky but it smells pretty good too! Caribbean Solutions is available online and in some retail stores.

The Deciding Factor: Most sunscreens that are biodegradable will be safe for use on nail polished nails and manicured nails. The emulsifiers that cause damage to the nails are not present in biodegradable sunscreens which tend to be plant based. Look for a sunscreen that is safe for the planet and you will likely find one that is equally safe for your manicure!
