Is the Temptation to Commit Adultery a Scheme of the Devil?

S.E.Gregg
In recent years many public figures such as athletes, politicians and entertainers have been caught cheating on their spouses. Making front-page news in the tabloids and becoming the topic of the day on television and radio talk shows. And sad to say, even the Christian community has had their share of infidelity scandals among it's clergy. With several Christian artist admitting their immoral indiscretions just this year alone.

Along with the recent saga of Tiger Woods admitting that he has been unfaithful to his wife. And to make things worst, more than one woman has come out of the woodwork alleging that they have had an affair with him. What does all of this mean?

Does this mean that cheating on your spouse is inevitable? Is it bound to happen? Are there circumstances that make you more vulnerable to cheat?

First we must realize that our families are the most important part of society. Our families affect our communities, neighborhoods and churches. And when families are destroyed, it has a domino effect on our communities, neighborhoods, and churches. Along with unwanted pregnancies, abortions, sexually transmitted diseases, divorce, domestic violence, substance abuse, and childhood delinquency, some of the devastating consequences of adultery. Our families are being attacked and adultery is one of the schemes that Satan(devil) uses to destroy the family.

The Bible teaches that we are in a spiritual athletic competition and one of our competitors is Satan. He wants to destroy the family structure our foundation. His job twenty-four hours a day, among other things, is to develop schemes to entrap spouses to commit adultery.("Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.", Ephesians 6:11)

We must look at this as an athlete that studies their competitor before a game. As a boxer prepares for a bout, a wrestler for a wrestling match and as a marathon runner prepares for their 26-mile racecourse. Athletes never compete without first developing a game plan to win their competition. And they train and discipline themselves so that they can carry out their game plan.

This is the same way that God wants us to look at ourselves, as spiritual athletes. And take the same drive that an athlete has to win their sports competition, to winning the spiritual competition against Satan and the schemes that he uses to entrap us to commit a sexual sin to destroy the family structure .

So we too have to take action and develop a game plan to win.
In my book: The Christian Olympics: Going for the Gold Crowns, there are several biblical strategies that can be used to resist cheating on your spouse in chapter four called Planning Strategies. Just as athletes develop a game plan to win their competition, a game plan must be developed to win the competition of sexual temptations to commit adultery.

Athletes know that they cannot achieve any goals unless they stop and devise strategies to win. This same action in winning sports competition is the same action that must be taken to avoid cheating on your spouse. We are in a spiritual athletic competition and "Yes You Can" avoid cheating on your spouse by planning strategies to win your boxing and wrestling matches against Satan and his schemes.
