Is it a migraine or a tension headache? Do you know what kind of headache you are having?

A tension headache is the most popular and can happen daily. The headaches are caused by muscle contractions that produce mild to moderate pain that comes and goes over a period of time. Most of these headaches are treatable with over the counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprophen.

Sinus headaches are known to go with deep and consistent pain in the cheek area, the bridge of the nose, and the forehead. The pain can intensify with sudden head movement and/or straining. Usually these headaches are accompanied by other symptoms such as nasal discharge, fever, feeling of fullness in ears, and swelling of the face. These headaches can also usually be treated with over the counter sinus medication. Just be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any type of sinus medication if you are diabetic, have high blood pressure, or have any other health condition for which you are taking prescription medication and mixing them can cause an unsafe reaction.

What is known as the mixed headache syndrome is simply the combination of migraines and tension headaches. Some people can treat these with over the counter medications while others have to go to their doctor depending on severity.

Migraines are some of the worst headaches in the world. The cause for these are unknown, but the affects can be devastating. These headaches are known to cause sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting, stomach upset, sensitivity to odors and noise, dizziness, blurred vision, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. These headaches can become so severe that the person has to stay in bed (sometimes two to three days). They can happen from one to four times in one month although some people have them more or less often than that. These headaches usually require a visit to the doctor and a prescription medicine to help ease the symptoms and pain. Migraine headaches actually tend to run in families.

Now days, there are numerous medications to treat all types of headaches. If over the counter medication does not work for you, talk to your doctor. If you would like information on the different medications and more information on headaches in general, go to www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches.
