Is There Any Incentive to Find Cures to All the Diseases of the World?

Mark Carter
In a world where money talks, I wonder at where the incentive is for pharmaceutical companies and anyone else involved in the medical field to really come up with effective and long-lasting cures for ailments such as cancer, senile dementia, arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis or AIDS. The money generated by millions upon millions of ailing people around the world pouring money into the medical and pharmaceutical industry either through they're own personal expense or the myriad of Health plans that currently exist must be keeping a lot of people and organizations in the medical field very wealthy indeed. It all puts me in mind of a 'Chris Rock' joke which suggests that pretty much nobody's been cured of anything much since 'Polio'. From the millions put aside by the government to all the independent associations pumping millions upon millions of dollars into research and testing what do we see as a result? Not f****ing much I would venture to say.

Like anything else in life organizations and associations need to be monitored by independent sources as well as the government. You cannot simply trust that medical research facilities that are recipients of donations are going to really enact a new and aggressive testing procedure. Instead of cures what we keep seeing are drugs made up of more and more elaborate compounds which stave off the effects of Aids, Senile Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis but never the actual cure. We can't even cure baldness it seems and I'm pretty sure there's more money going into that research from pharmaceutical companies than is going towards valid disease preventative drugs.

I would make the analogy of comparing the oil situation to the medical situation. We could certainly continue to develop differing means of energy but the oil companies have so much clout and there's such an entrenched feeling that we have to stick with oil that we continue to live and die (literally) by the power of the black stuff. Are all these fun-runs, charity raffles and Aids telethons really helping those of us suffering from these conditions or are we just throwing money after money in the hope that the tests and research carried out will actually come to any kind of fruition or that they are legitimate tests at all. We should of course continue to seek cures for all that ails us in the world but I suggest that where this money goes after it leaves our hands should be something that is closely monitored by independent groups who don't have an interest in cures NOT being found.
