Is There Any Truth to Old Wives Tales, Myths and Superstitons About Conceiving ?

Antoinette McGowan
When couples announce that they are trying to start a family everyone seems to want to unload a bunch of advice on how to conceive. The thing is though is that a lot of advice that people will hand out is just plain old wives tales or superstitions. The following are a few that we received when my husband and I started trying for our last little one.

One piece of advice that I heard was to tie a string on my head board and if the string broke during intercourse then I was for sure going to conceive that night. The thing is though is that I would discover the string broken several times but no pregnancy would result.

Another piece of advice was to just relax, have a glass of wine and make a romantic evening of it. While the glass of wine did help me relax and the romantic evening did wonders for my relationship, I did not conceive a baby. With this one I do recommend taking advantage of this advice just because it makes for a wonderful night with your spouse, however just do not get your hopes up for a pregnancy to result based on the wine and romance alone.

Stand on your head after sex can help the sperm move faster towards the egg. Yes I will shamefully admit that I did fall victim to this piece of advice. For those who have never struggled with infertility you can not imagine how desperate a woman can get after a year of trying and no success. With my last son we tried infertility treatments to no avail so in the end we were trying this piece of advice as well. Sadly this one just does not work anymore than the others. I did tell my husband after a few times trying this method that maybe we were doing it wrong, maybe the person meant he was suppose to stand on his head. He on the other hand was not desperate enough to try standing on His head afterwards.
