Is There Anyone the Voters Trust?

The second Obama/McCain debate is over. People across the country are debating who won. One lady asked, "Can we trust you?" That one question hangs in the air like a dark cloud over the United States. Congressional approval is dismal, presidential approval is dismal, big business approval is dismal and the voters feel they are powerless and helpless.
The two-party system of the United States has developed into a system of "no-confidence". Neither political party is able to field a candidate capable of getting better than fifty percent of the vote. Congressional office-holders if voted on by those outside their districts would never make it into the twenty-five percent range.

The question comes back, "Can we trust you?" and the answer of the voters is "No!" Self-interest, special interest and big business lobbying are at the root of the problem. There doesn't appear to be any politician willing to buck the system and be the true maverick on side of the voter.

What if a poll asked, "Who among all the people in the United States would you vote for to become president or senator? What names, serious names, would be put forth? Is there any leader, any businessperson, any religious person, any academic the people could look to and say, "Yes! I would vote for this person!"

Conversations around the barber chair, over the bar, leaning against the fence or in the local coffeehouse tend to run the gambit of politics and everyday life. Occasionally, someone will say something to the effect, "Americans are devoid of morality and decency." Whether true or not about Americans as a whole isn't the issue but the morality and decency of our political and business leaders is very suspect. We have no heroes, no Robin Hood's, no super-hero to come to our rescue. All we have are more politicians claiming they will stand up for the middle class. That they do in many, many words but no in actions.

The most amazing thing that could happen this political season is for some person to stand up and say, "You can trust me" and the voters believe that person.
