Is There a Bully in the Twitter Playground?

Senators Specter and Grassley Duke it Out

Jean Bailey Robor
Twitter is an ever-increasing famous website for text-like messages which are limited to 140 characters. Everyone from your neighbor to your dad to media outlets to celebrities 'tweet' their short notes about what's going on in their lives to sharing interesting links to other sites, videos and articles. Many times a tweet is simply "Going to dinner at PFChangs" or "Check out this website!" or "At the Panthers game; score is 7-21."

If you log on to your Twitter account you may find such tweets as:

Well, here I sit waiting to see if I get picked to be a juror. -Comedian Bill Engvall (@billengvall)

I hate tweeting from my phone...I am such an idiot on iphone plus these idiot acrylic nails are really idiotic trying to push the letters.- Kirstie Alley, actress (@kirstiealley)

I'm doing the Bill Mayer show 2night. I've been researching this Health Care bill all day looking 4 facts. Not sure what to think. - Ashton Kutcher, actor (@aplusk)

We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same. - Tony Robbins, life coach (@tonyrobbins)

Hey tweeters! Doin a lil recording today. Still tryin to wake up though. - Kris Allen, 2009 American Idol (@KrisAllen4Real)

Writing an article about the Senator fight on Twitter. - yep, that's my latest tweet (@jeanbaileyrobor)

Now, a couple of US Senators have kicked it up a notch. Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa have exchanged a few less than cordial tweets. While it hasn't gotten out of hand...yet...this gal hopes that they can keep the conversation civil. It all started when Specter posted 'Called Senator Grassley to tell him to stop spreading myths about health care reform and imaginary "death panels."' And then, 'I will try to persuade Senator Grassley that the availability of counseling is appropriate and should be included in health care reform.' The statement about Grassley spreading myths apparently caused this response, 'Specter got it all wrong that I ever used words "death boards". Even liberal press never accused me of that. So change ur last Tweet Arlen.'

Stay tuned to Twitter to see where it goes from there.

Stephen Colbert, political satirist, tweets: I suggest we do what every good American does when dissatisfied with the state of affairs. Watch an episode of "So You Think You Can Dance"!

I concur. Maybe these Senators should take his advice or, at the very least, play nice.
