Metro areas that include large companies and different types of campuses are interested in improving their technological systems and the extreme speed that GigE offers does have some businesses listening and even implementing it into their systems. For example Cisco eagerly began to employ it with their high tech systems.
Something that has got a lot of businesses that deal with high tech systems is the fact that the operating costs of GigE is far less than anything close to the same potential, costs and combine that with the fact that it is less for the equipment and upgrades makes it quite an enticing idea for them to ponder.
Even though there is an apparent increase in interest for GigE technology it still has not found itself into the actual mainstream of daily life. There are some providers that have begun to provide this service for large companies. However, there are providers such as AboveNet, Cogent, FiberCity Networks, Telseon and Yipes Communications.
GigE which started just as a novelty for those who dealt with it on a daily basis is now just being thought of as a possible solution for many large public networks. People who have already had the opportunity to experience GigE have all been quite pleased and amazed at the speed and power of this new technology.
GigE has been successful on the metro and campus levels, the providers who work with the residential population are being hesitant at this time. This however; is nothing new for these companies. They will usually sit back and watch from the sidelines whenever this is a new technology and make sure that it is worth it before they will get on board and offer it to the general public.
With that being said, if you live in a residential area of the United States, you are probably not going to have access to GigE technology. The U. S. Itself has a problem to begin with, they simply do not have enough fiber to be able to offer it to all populations at this time either. Europe and Asia on the other hand do and are beginning to offer it to their residential populations.
