Is There Too Much Media Involvement in Sports?
The Media Obviously Makes Sports a Lot Better, but Do They Take it Too Far?
Imagine how boring a sporting event would be without some media involvement. If there were no announcers, would anyone even watch? Probably not, as the game would be too boring. If there was only one camera angle would it take away from the excitement? Probably, as there so many different camera angles these days that we tend to not appreciate it all. If there were no interviews how would we understand what each player participating in the sport was thinking?
I guess my point is that sports would be pretty boring if there was no media involvement, but lately this involvement has been taken way too far. For example interviews are necessary, but are in game interviews necessary? These interviews would obviously cause some distraction from the game, and distractions can obviously take you off of your game.
Another example of how the media is too involved, is in there field presence. What I mean by that is the appearance they make on the field especially after the game has ended. If you happened to watch the NBA finals you would have seen the San Antonio Spurs win the title. You would have also seen hundreds of people from the media rush the court to try and get an interview. Is this right? I'm sure most if not all of those players wanted to celebrate with their team instead of give an interview less than a minute after they had just won. I think that this practice is completely unacceptable, and any questions should be held until the post game conference. The court should always be a place for just the players, and no one else.
Behind any great scandal in sports is a ton of media coverage. Sports stars have basically no privacy, as people love drama, and the media is the one that supplies the different forms of drama. Most of these sports stars do nothing worse than many average people. It is just that their mistakes get blown up because of the microscope imposed on them by the media. The media invades privacy, and creates stories that are either false, or do not deserve to be stories.
There is no denying that sports would be a pretty bland form of entertainment without media involvement. In fact sports may not be any type of entertainment without it. But is the involvement taken too far? When the media is ruining personal lives then something is obviously wrong.
