It's really not known for sure when the first food contests were held. It could have been a bunch of cave men fighting over their dinner one evening. I imagine competition for food back then would have been pretty strong.
Today there are many reasons why people join in the crazy food competition. One of the more obvious reasons would be the shear fun of it. How about those contests where you wolf down the food as fast as you can but you're not allowed to use your hands? Seems like fun to me.
Are there rules for competitive eating contest? You bet! These eating contests are governed by (IFOCE). This is the International Federation of Competitive Eating. It was formed in 1997 as a way to unify eating competitions around the world and regulate safety standards.
Some of the rules are- You must be 18 years of age or older. You cannot eat until the official gives the signal. If the food has two parts to it, such as a hot dog you can eat each piece separately. And dipping the food into a liquid to soften it is allowed.
Let's get back to that talk about making money. It seems to be a favorite subject for most people. Some events for making money include
Old Town Lewisville World Tamale Eating Championship
A new record was set last year for 71 tamales in 12 minutes.
Total prizes $3,500
US Buffalo Wing Eating Competition
Last August was the 7th annual competition.

Nathon's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at the Saratoga Race Course-Travelers Festival
The last winner ate 23.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

There just might be something to these competitive eating contests after all, The money looks pretty good, you have fun and if you win, then your famous too!
