Is it Too Soon to Decorate? When Should Christmas Decorations Go Up?

Is the Day After Halloween Too Soon to Start Setting Up the Christmas Tree?

K. Anderson
When October rolls around, people start to get excited, because they know that there are three great holidays coming up: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. However, some people tend to get a little bit too excited a little bit too soon. If you like to set up your Christmas tree the day after Halloween, I may be talking about you. So how soon is too soon? I'd like to give an assessment of when Christmas decorations should start going up, and when they probably shouldn't.

-The day after Halloween- This is probably a little too early to be setting up the Christmas tree and putting out all of your little decorations. I know you're beginning to get excited about this holidays, but you just got done giving out candy. Take a while to rest in November and take time to truly enjoy your life and be thankful for all that you have.

-The day after Thanksgiving- As soon as Thanksgiving is over, I say go for it. Go ahead and break out that Christmas tree and start bringing down the boxes from the attic that you have stored all of your great decorations in. Let the kids join in setting out the nativity and placing ornaments on the tree. Right after Thanksgiving you are in a state of mind where you truly do appreciate everything you have- this is a great time to decorate your house and be reminded of how beautiful Christmas really is.

-The day before Christmas- You probably don't want to wait until December 24 to start setting up your Christmas decorations. I know you may feel like the holiday season is crazy and you have a million errands to run and presents to buy, but try to get your decorations set up before the last minute. You should take some time to enjoy your decorations, and not set them up just to take them down within a matter of days.

-Early December- My vote for when you should set up decorations would be sometime right around December 1st. This is a great time to go ahead and set up your tree, lights, and whatever else you may have. By doing this you will have almost a full month to enjoy the sights, but you won't be sick of them like you might be if you had started unpacking Christmas stuff on November 1st. Let December be a great month full of Christmas joy and happiness- and remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.
