Is Tracy Morgan a Homophobic Bully?

Valerie Ferrari
Comedian Tracy Morgan has already predictably apologized for a particularly disturbing part of his stand-up routine at a Nashville comedy show. The 42-year-old African-American actor and comedian delivered a homophobic rant,. which included what would happen if he found out his son was gay. Morgan said he would stab his own child, referring to his son by the acceptable use of the "N" word among some members of the black community.

Some audience members were so shocked they got up and left.. One audience member named Kevin Rogers recapped the episode in a Facebook post to emphasize why Morgan's rant was both inappropriate and no laughing matter. In "Why I No Longer "Like" Tracy Morgan -- a Must Read," Rogers pointed out that Morgan displayed his hatred and contempt for gays, saying "Born this Way" is a pile of manure, while invoking God to back him up. "God don't make no mistakes," the misguided comedian said, adding that being gay is a choice.

In addition to straight out saying he would commit murder if it came to his attention that his son was gay, Morgan also advocated more violence regarding bullyng issues, specifically as it applies to gay people. Morgan called gay people derogatory names and said they should stop whining about bullying, because it's not an important issue. He expanded this remark to include all children who are being bullied, advising them to just "bust some a$s and beat those other little f*ckers that bully them, not whine about it."

I've always marvelled at how many celebrities come out to say they were bullied -- but no one ever says they were a bully. I think Tracy Morgan just did. When we have had youth gangs beating up defenseless children just for sport and the problem is so widespread that no one knows what to do about it, the last thing we need is for any adult to come out and say it's okay to hurt someone if they can't defend themselves.

You may think he's just saying fight back if someone picks on you, but I think anyone who believes that in today's world is wrong. Most people who have heard and even believed this "fight back and the bullies will leave you" theory as a teenager or young adult, know of quite a few exceptions by the time they are in their 40s. Well before we are in our 40s, we are also supposed to have learned enough about the laws we are all supposed to obey and be mature enough to realize that verbal bullying is the first step to the crime of assault.

After delivering this insane diatribe, Tracy Morgan finished up with a particularly crass statement, punctuated with the sentiment that he did not "f*cking care" if he offended some gays.

Now since he has had to issue an apology, apparently he does care -- about what happens to his career as a result of this. But I am not going to go into why in the world someone who is well-loved in the entertainment business would want to derail their success in this manner. Comedians like Tina Fey have already come out to condemn Morgan's statements while maintaining that man is not like that at all. ""It also doesn't line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person."

I'm with Kevin Rogers and I wasn't even there. I don't like Tracy Morgan anymore. I didn't "like' him to begin with. But now I don't even like anyone who says he doesn't really believe what he said, because that would make it even worse. That would mean he was deliberately playing a role in Nashville because he thought that would resonate with his audience.
