Identity thieves can find out all sorts of information from your trash, and for some, digging in your trash is just the beginning of their attack on your identity. Even junk mail can contain information that is useful for an identity theft. Ever get credit card offers in the mail? You had better start running them through a shredder before you toss them into the trash can.
Buying a shredder is a great investment whenever you consider the alternative, of someone going through your trash and finding documents that you never would have dreamed could harm you. Paper shredders are not that expensive and some can even shred credit cards and compact disc's, which is another great way to prevent identity theft. When shredding credit cards, I suggest picking up the fragments of the credit cards that have the numbers on them, and put them in separate trash bags, or even putting them in trash bags on different days so that there is no way the perpetrator can piece them back together.
Sadly, an identity theft can live right across the street from you or across the world, and they gather as much information about you as they possibly can in order to steal your credit or identity. Be very cautious who you let work on your computer or let into your home. Even going to a restaurant and paying with a credit card can be risky business, with so many strangers having access to you credit card number.
With so many ways for an identity thief to obtain information about you and your finances, always be on your guard, and as a general rule, if a document has your name on it, shred it. Be aware of what you are throwing away, and try to set out your trash at the last minute before the trash man comes to haul it away. If you live in an area that allows you to burn your trash, burn it! These tips in themselves will not stop a persistent identity thief in their tracks if they really want your information, but it will make it much harder for them, and may have them moving on to their next victim.
