Is a Tubal Ligation Right for You?

Having your tubes tied is an important personal decision. There are many valid reasons for getting a tubal ligation. Sterilization is typically permanent, and you should consider all options before opting for this surgery. A few women do become pregnant even after their surgery, so even after you have your tubes tied you should take note of any pregnancy symptoms you experience.

Having a tubal ligation due to medical problems

Some women may choose to have a tubal ligation to avoid passing on genetic diseases to another generation. Also, having certain medical problems can make it difficult to be an active parent and caregiver. Making a decision based on medical problems to have your tubes tied should be a decision you make yourself, not because others believe you should.

Having a tubal ligation after having enough kids

I chose to have a tubal ligation because I only wanted two kids. I also have stepchildren as well as a large extended family. Your doctor may ask you if you would change your mind if something happened to your kids.

Having a tubal ligation because you are positive about not wanting kids

Some couples decide after a few years that they will never want to have children. Over time, birth control risks for women increase, and if both partners are positive about their choice, then sterilization is often the best answer. One question you should ask yourself in this situation is whether you would want kids if your current relationship didn't work out.

How age may affect having a tubal ligation

Some doctors will not do a tubal ligation on a woman who is under a certain age, and may express additional concerns with women who have not had any children. In some cases, you may be asked to sign a waiver stating your desire to have your tubes tied and then waiting a month before having the surgery. This may vary based on local laws and insurance regulations. If your doctor won't do the surgery for you due to your age, check with other doctors in your area. You may be able to find another doctor willing to give you a tubal ligation.

Changing your mind after a tubal ligation

While it is possible in some cases to reverse a tubal ligation, the surgery is expensive and not always effective. Your chances of having a ectopic pregnancy are increased and your chances of getting pregnant after a tubal reversal are decreased. If you have any question of whether you may wish to have children later, a better option for birth control may be an IUD.

Consider all of your options when deciding whether to have a tubal ligation. If possible, give yourself a waiting period before scheduling your surgery. Although I knew I only wanted two kids while still pregnant with the second, I tried the IUD for a year after I had my second son, just to be sure I didn't change my mind.
