Is TV Creating Drug Addicts?

Sherrill Fulghum
Government and law enforcement officials are so concerned about curtailing the illegal drug problems that they have forgotten about the legal ones. Not only have they forgotten that there is a major problem concerning the use and abuse of prescribed and over the counter drugs the powers that be have deregulated so much that pharmaceutical companies can advertise their wares on the radio and television like they were so many groceries.

The airwaves, especially the television, have been inundated with commercials sporting the advantages to one kind of drug or another trying to convince America that they are in need of any number of designer drugs that are only available in the name brad version at the cost that would make any drug cartel leader drool with envy. It's bad enough that these ads are even on the television but there are drugs like those for male enhancement that have absolutely no business being aired when children can see them.

Advertising agencies and pharmaceutical companies have designed ads that have Americans running to the doctor demanding the latest designer drug with every sneeze, cough, scratch, or teary eyed event. If we were to believe these commercials then the male population could not function without some chemical enhancement. Pharmaceutical companies have always put high prices on their wares, but with the approval of television ads that cost thousands of dollars for each airing the prices for these prescription drugs have gone through the roof. The people who really need these medications cannot afford to buy them even with prescription drug plans. And as for the rest of the population? If these pharmaceutical companies had their way then the rest of us would be dependent on a list of drugs with names only the medical profession can pronounce. Not to mention the fact that these ads are creating a generation of hyprocondriacs thinking that they cannot sruvive without some sort of chemical help from any number of these drugs seen on the television.

The buying and selling of prescription drugs among those who can legally acquire them and those who only want to get high have been a problem long overlooked for many years. With the airwaves being bombarded with ad spots for these drugs the problem is only increasing. And there have been numerous instances of people having to enter rehab because they have become addicted to these same prescription drugs.

Granted the use of drugs like cocaine and heroin are a problem; but, prescription drugs like those for pain and the plethora of new designer drugs hitting us from every direction on the television airwaves is as big if not a bigger problem for the population. A problem that is not being addressed with the various drug interdiction policies; not only is it not being addressed the issue is being completely ignored. If anything the problem is being purpetuated.
