Is it Twenty-Ten Already?

A New Year's Recollection

Diane Zoller-Ciatto
When I was just a little kid,
As the year crept to its end,
My parents always had a party,
With food and drink and friends.

The television was always on,
As they sat and drank and ate,
Horns and whistles at the ready,
And I got to stay up late!

At five of twelve,
We gathered round the black and white tv,
While Guy Lombardo and his band,
Played Auld Lang Syne again.

We married and as time would have,
Our children grew from babes,
With preteens now we all stayed home,
To celebrate this day.

The kids would have chips and dip,
And punch with ginger ale,
As we couldn't wait to celebrate,
The dropping of the ball.

Dick Clark was playing Rock & Roll,
Times Square was all aglow,
With people wall to wall,
In weather freezing cold.

But now it's nearing twenty-ten;
And both our kids are grown.
So Nana and Poppy sit home together,
Wrestling for the remote control.

So drink a toast for all the years,
And what those New Years meant,
For you'll awake one New Years Day,
And wonder where they went!
