Is Twitter the Social Network for You?

J. R. Steele
OK... you've all heard about social networking and you may have even checked out a few networking sites. One of the more popular sites is Twitter (www.twitter.com). This "micro-blogging" site is free to all and enables the ability to send and receive messages instantly around the world. Twitter's tilt on social networking is about following the activities of your "friends" as well as keeping everyone informed about your activities, while keeping the text to a minimum. Each message is limited to 140 characters. Ask a question, get an answer from all of the friends that "follow" you. It is similar to instant messaging, but these messages, known as "tweets" are broadcast to ALL of your followers or anyone that happens to log onto your Twitter page. Because access to Twitter has been made mobile by the availability of countless desktop and mobile phone software applications, it is quickly becoming the social networking service of choice.

Despite the growing popularity of Twitter, there are still mixed feelings about its usefulness. Interview your friends and you will probably here responses like:

* " OMG, I can't stop tweeting!"
* "Twitter? What the heck is that?"
* "Yeah... ummm... I think it is boring. I just don't get it!"
* "I LOVE Twitter! It allows me to get my message out to so many people all at the same time!"
* "Twitter is a waste of time!"
* "There very little difference between the social network sites. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace... they're all the same!"

No matter the sentiment, there is one thing that seems to be constant. Twitter has the reputation of being "RIGHT NOW!" More than any of the other social network services, Twitter is perceived as having the most current information. Whatever you read is happening at the very moment you are reading it. No long stories, no fluff information. Just instant and specific detail. This reputation of real-time information and instant gratification is the wave that Twitter is riding on right now. The only question is... will you get swept up???

    I am a Twitter user with around 5,600 followers. I enjoy using it but it can eat up lots of time.

    I think Twitter has great possibilities. I haven't found very much time for it lately. It's all about time...

    I started an account, but haven't used it yet. I just don't have the time right now to familiarize myself with the site or learn it. I'm technologically impaired so these things take awhile for me lol

    I've found that those who try to criticize Twitter tend to be completely ignorant of the medium. It reminds me of people who barely use the web and somehow think they're low opinion of the entire internet is well informed. Twitter, like most things online, can be a powerful tool and great source of entertainment and news, or just an outlet for endless navel gazing.
