Is it Unfair to Compare Britney to Her Old Self?

Ana Montano
In a recent interview with Playboy, Justin Timberlake defended ex-girlfriend Britney Spears against internet attacks on the pop star. In reference to Youtube videos that show the difference between "Old Britney" and "New Britney," Timberlake said, " in Britney's defense, if you pulled up a video I did from 2003, I couldn't do the s**t I did then either."

Britney is widely regarded as less vocally talented than her peers like Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera and even her more zealous fans would hesitate to boast about her singing. And in addition to her singing, since the infamous 2007 MTV Video Music Awards performance of "Gimme More," her lackluster dancing has been the target of ridicule. But Timberlake brings up a very good point. Britney Spears is almost 30 years old and she has had two children. Perhaps we should be more forgiving.

The media loves to attack her for phoning in her comeback. But it might be more than a tad unreasonable to expect the same 21 year old that we knew back then to grace our arenas today. Time doesn't stop for celebrities anymore than it does for you or me. It's been twelve years since her debut album "Baby One More Time" was released and she became a sensation. Even without taking her early career into consideration, that's an impressively long time to be performing. And that doesn't mean that she never really came back but that she's leaving her 20s behind her and her better dance moves along with it.

Despite all the bad press, she is showing no signs of slowing down. The star is currently gearing up for the "Femme Fatale" world tour, which will take her through North America and Europe. And by now fans know to expect a well produced and fun show, even if there's a little less hip swiveling than there used to be. Let's face it, even in her heyday, Britney wouldn't have won a season of "So You Think You Can Dance." There's no reason why we should expect that of her now.

She may not be remembered as the best singer or the best dancer. But she'll forever be a larger than life pop music icon and is a force to be reckoned with on the charts even today. And even the biggest and brightest stars grow old. We can't really hold it against her.

I'm so glad to see that some people out there are actually able to view things realistically. This is a great article.

ACTUALLY her dance moves seem stiff and uncoordinated now because she is on some pretty heavy medication for her bipolar disorder. I would wager to say most people couldn't do even as well.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, BidsNew.com
